Here are three consecutive UOA's of Shell Rotella T in my 2007 GL1800 Goldwing. The progression runs left to right ... the first UOA is the first column, etc.

The bike came from the dealer with Honda GN-4. I ran that for perhaps 600 miles, then swapped to Amsoil 10W-40. Rotella went in at 2,724 and you see the rest.

To my untrained eye it looks pretty good. Viscosity in grade each time, but just barely. OCI at 3K seems very safe. I'm happy to see he Iron and Copper numbers coming down.

Tin introduced itself a 2ppm ... not sure what that means and if I should care. Probably not. Thoughts?

Holy sheep dip guacamole! That's lodza zinc and phos in that CI-4+ stuff! Extra calcium too, it appears... The standard oil is doing just as good a job, though, based on the wear counts.

That tiny extra bit of moly in the first run was probably left over from the Honda oil.

Great numbers. You've chosen the right motor oil for your bike, that's for sure. The CU is trending down, and I'd say you're pretty stable for the next, say... 90,000 miles or so. :)

And the CJ-4 has more Boron than the CI-4+, and I read somewhere that Boron has anti-wear properties and they're using it as a substitute for the mandated reduction of ZDDP ... but I could be wrong on that.

Rotella is great stuff ... though I'll confess to breaking down in a moment of weakness and putting Mobil 4T Racing oil in it. Shifting is no better or worse than Rotella. Foolish me.

The second run of RTS was the syn 5W40 so it had a little more zinc phos.

Good job typing that in, looks good.

Thanks. It took a little doing. The font is "Courier New," which is a mono-spaced font. That helps keep the columns aligned. But I discovered this forum strips out blanks in excess of one, so column alignment I'd achieved with blanks in Notepad didn't work here. That's what the periods are for. And when I didn't want the periods to show (as they don't in the column headers) I made the leading periods a color of white.

I've got my geekiness covered two ways -- an oil geek and a computer/font geek. My wife laughs at me for both.

I used to also think that's what the boron was always for but I've since learned that additive companies have "boronated" many different types of molecules and some of them are detergent OR dispersant molecules. So they have yet again taken some predictability away from us UOA lookers.

don,
your uoa lacks any real dollars spent on the oil itself.
this is bad for the economy.
you need to waste more money on oils that do not stand up as well.
i would like to suggest you spend at least $8 per quart on your next oci.
your current rate of spendature is just not up to snuff!

how dare you! how dare you!!!

Don, what is your driving style like? Any high rev-ing?

I've been skeptical of the whole Rotella-in-bike concept, but this looks outstanding! I want very badly to try it in my CBR, but I just haven't been able to muster up the courage. The idea of spending $10 vs $40 for oil is very encouraging.

V1, you will have no problems with the rotella (or the other hdeo's, delo, delvac 1300, castrol tection) they all have pretty robust add packs and just overall perform well.

Some riders have reports on here with 8000 miles on the oil with good wear results using rotella. I have run it in my zx9 (actually have the rottela syn in there now) and run it in my dirtbike. Its a good oil.

Like don has said before, it is a pretty darn good oil for 3K+ intervals for $9/gallon.

Yeah, well I felt guilty about that so I put the Mobil 4T into it for this interval. I spent more on four quarts than I did on the previous three gallons of Rotella!

Not really ... certainly not like you'd experience with a CBR. The Wing redlines at about 7K or 8K, and I've cranked it up to 5K or so for short periods of time. Generally I hum along at 3.3K or so.

Still, there are plenty of others who've run Rotella in sport bikes with good success, as 02zx9r mentions.

For $9/gallon at Wal-Mart you can't go wrong. Honestly ... give it a shot in the CBR and plan on swapping it out and doing a UOA at ... oh ... 1K miles if you're at all worried. The $22 for the UOA plus the $9 for the oil is still less than $40 for boutique oil.

I've been seriously looking at the Mobil Delvac 5W-40 ESP, which is their full-synthetic CJ-4/SM. I can't find it anywhere, though ... truckstops have the normal 15w40 Mobil CJ-4, but not the synthetic. And Rotella doesn't have their 5W CJ-4 out yet, darn it! :-)

Put these search terms, "Delvac 1 CJ-4 5W-40", into MSN's search engine and one of the first few hits will be an online place that sells Delvac 1 CJ-4 5W-40.

Let me know how that goes because I'm thinking about running a straight weight in my CBR600 hurricane as well.

I tried to follow the whole strait weight lecture, but did not gain much from it. All I care aboiut is how cold I can use it in and how is the visc at op temp. Here in the bike app, maybe it IS a good choice since shear is such a factor.

I have a ton of Delo 30 and a few gallons of Rotella 30, that I've been returning to WalMart for cash since I only paid $1/gallon. It's an old bike, so I did not want to use synth...it's not cost effective. Given a choice, I suppose I'd use the 15w40, but do you guys like the 30 that much? The engine calls for 10w-40, but with shearing and older PCMO formulas, I suppose the 12cSt 30 will hold it's own by comparison.

Each time I see a CJ-4 UOA, I'm impressed. I believe the fears of the loss of some additives is just not founded.

How does it shift? I'm running the 5w-40 CI-4 right now in my Wing. I'd be very interested in going to the CJ-4 as it's nearly 1/2 the price of the "synthetic" Rotella in my area. Looks as though we can get near identical UOA performance with a lot less expensive oil!

It shifted no better or worse than anything else. I have Mobil 4T Motorcycle in it right now and the shifting is comparable to the Rotella. I'm going back to Rotella after this round of Mobil and I'm not looking back.

don,
i think i've warned you once you are NOT doing your part to help the economy.
please send me any tax refund you get to offset me doing *my* part to help it out.
how dare you not put more money into xom and instead put it in a foreign company like royal dutch.
