What you can't comprehend is the simple fact the oil requirements I quoted were in fact from the Briggs and Stratton ENGINE MANUAL that TB also supplies with their generator operators manual...the oil requirements I posted are straight from Briggs, not this cheap TB.

And yes, I knew it was an MTD before I bought it.

So it is you who are mistaken...and I probably know more about the CTD under my hood than you know tractors because unlike your "SM", it not simple.

Have a nice day...

deeter16317,

I have that same engine and I use 100% synthetic Amsoil "ACD" oil (because of the 12 TBN) year round. It comes in a gallon and will provide several oil changes. I have not noticed any consumption. Amsoil also has a newer small engine oil "ASE".

I also use a Wix 51348 (long) filter.

Thanks for that, I do have a supplier for Amsoil now, and I was wondering if the long filter would fit (I figured as much since nothing was in front of it).

The only 10w30s I have used in small engines are Mystik and Rotella, both HDEO synthetic blends. I've been happy with both in early spring through late fall use.

If you want a full synthetic I would try the Amsoil ASE.

for the AMSOIL ASE SAE30(10w-30). I use this stuff in both my two B&S 6.5 HP Quantum engines on my Craftsman mowers and also in my 11HP Tecumseh on my Coleman 5000w Powermate generator for year round use. Out of the 3 engines there I have never seen any more oil consumption than with using your regular brand SAE30 dino oil, and the engines I find start easier and run better.

+1 on the Amsoil ASE 10w-30(sae 30). I just started using that in my OPE. My generator only saw dino for the first 350 hours, mainly Pennzoil HD-30. No problems with it. Decided to go syn in my generator, especially if needed during hurricane season (90+ degrees during the summer).

Since I already had 5w40HDEO Schaeffer on the shelf, and it seems pretty close to a 5w30PCMO in cold weather flow characteristics (according to literature that I reviewed); I installed the PO-provided B&S "extended life" filter and dumped in about 2 quarts of Schaeffers. I can only assume the OE fill was a SAE30 because it was a lot thicker than the 5w40 I replaced it with...

I also found the PO installed a B&S HD "washable" air filter, but because I know nothing about it and the fact the owner's manual indicates it needed oiled (and it appeared dry); I removed it for a regular paper filter for the time being...I have some Amsoil filter oil, I just got to find it.

Other than not having a hookup to feed the house, I'm about as ready for the impending ice storm as I can be...

How much gas do you have in cans with marine Sta-Bil ready to go?

Modern vehicles are just about imposable to siphon gas from.

And judging from the size of the gen-set you have you are probably looking at something like one, to one and and a quarter gallons per hour.

I've got about 10 gallons sitting, ready. One car can be siphoned quite easily, I'm lucky in that respect because its my daily driver and never below 1/2 tank.

I really don't expect trouble...not like I can really load the genset up without being able to power the entire house, but at least I can keep the house warm and have some necessities.

BTW, when it come to low cost oil, the lowest cost oil I would consider for a gen-set would be Rotella 6T 5W-40 for winter and or summer use, and the lowest cost (Rotella T 15w40 only for summer only use). Both of these are JASO - MA rated. Being JASO - MA rated, you know it is good enough for an air cooled engien.

You can get both of these at Wal-Mart in either quarts or large jugs.

The last I heard Rotella 10W-30 is NOT JASO - MA rated, and therfore should NOT be used in an air cooled engine.
