those high mileage oils good or not?

I have 103,000 miles on my pathfinder V6 and now I feel like its time to try the High Mileage oils that even suppose to swell up the seals if need be . Is this a wise thing to change to the high Mileage oil or just continue using the conventional that the manual recommends?

If your're not having any consumption or leak issues I'd stick with the oil you've been using. You can always switch to a High Mileage oil if and when you have a problem.

There's nothing wrong with using them. Are there benefits? There can be, depending on the vehicle in question. Me, I'll be using High Mileage oil soon in both vehicles, strictly because I scored on it cheap from Amazon a few months back. A lot of it.

I have to do some more investigating on the situation , a few drips since the last oil Change could be a loose oil filter or oil cooler gasket I never had a drip before this and always use a premium end conventional oil because the manual stipulates do not use a synthetic oil .hoe ever doesn't stipulate against a High Mileage oil? I don think they had a High Mileage oil back then 2003

The whole idea is condition seals before there is a problem, most here on BITOG don't grasp the concept... Surely by 100-125K mi, most engines would likely benefit... Mobil 1 High Mileage has cut consumption in half(had no leaks) in my '98 Grand Marquis that has 71K mi...

Of course some std oils may be better than others at keeping seals pliable, no doubt a topic for speculation...

Some benefits and the brand name High Mileage oils are good oils otherwise. It's like chicken soup.

High mileage oils don't exactly "swell up" the seals. That's more-so what products like Lucas Oil Stop Leak or Blue Devil Stop Leak do. Seals leak when they get hard & "dried up", high mileage oils condition the seals & make them pliable again.

Valvoline MaxLife & Pennzoil High Mileage are the best available in my opinion. Use either & I'm sure your small oil drips will stop after a couple oil changes.

Find out whats leaking first.. if a loose filter fix it.. dont jump to a quick fix if it might not be needed.. find out why there is a leak, loose filter? Oil drain bolt not tight enough?

+1 There is no downside and making the seals soft and pliable is a good thing

I have some questions.

How does High Mileage oil reduce oil consumption if it is the same viscosity grade as the regular oil?

Why wouldn't all oils have this ability?

If high mileage oil keeps the seals pliable without making them swell, wouldn't all oils do this?

Is there a down side to High Mileage oils other than cost?

Exactly! Plus the high mileage oils are formulated with more anti-wear and cleaning additives/better add packs. It's a small premium to pay for the high mileage oils, but with all the discounts going on right now it does not really matter that much. Example: Havoline High Mileage 5w30 5 quart jug at Walmart for $12.91.

Had a small leak coming from above tbe oil filter on my daughter's '98 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, I used Pennzoil High Mileage next oil change and the leak stopped.

(+1 for me, I got the oil free from the job right b4 I was gonna purchase it) They throw leaky bottles in the trash....smh
