Thinner is better?

No way. For example, you could use some 4 cst motor oil that doesn't lose any viscosity and it will ruin your engine prematurely. Engines are designed around a range of oil viscosities. Go too low and inadequate lubrication occurs.

Thicker is better.........

You could also use 20 weight ol in 30 weight application under artic conditions. 0w-20 in extreme cold...I'd do it. I already plan on 5w-20 in our 1998 non-back-speced Honda in winter.

Generally you can run what you like providing you are:
 prepared to take risk,
 do UOA's frequently,
 not worried about cost,
 your decision is well researched and
 is based on sound science and truth.

Doc Haas runs 0w20 in an engine which calls for a 5w40 or 10w60 oil, but if read his articles you can tell he is not messing around. He knows his stuff for his intended purpose.

Not everyone has Dr Haas’s ability, academically and/or financially, to go at it alone.

Molekule slogan quiet rightly points out sometimes better to read more and post less.

Reread second half post above, providing:
 your decision is well researched and
 is based on sound science and truth.

I'm assuming if you depart from a standard recommendation, you would have common sense to follow through on the technical aspects and requirements supporting your decision.

Have you read his writings on this? It is not a simple as that mitchcoyote. (love your posting name by the way)

I have been reading Dr. Haas's engine oil lubrication treatise, Motor Oil 101-204, I just began 104, and I think he makes total sense.

I sent him a really stupid PM a few minutes ago. I wonder if he will respond.

Now, after having read more of Dr. Haas's writings, I am actually considering running a full synthetic 0w 20 in my 3.0 Mitsu 6G72 V6. I really am. Somebody, please, talk me out of this if it is a totally bad idea. Please show me how he is wrong.

Has anybody done this, in an engine with 120K+ miles, after two ARX treatments?

Sorry for thinking out loud here, and asking for feedback is apparently not OK either, for me at least. I was just hoping, that someone knowledgeable, would help me understand this all better.

Having nearly finished studying Dr. Hass. When I finish my 2nd ARX treatment, I am going to try Mobil 1 0w 30, and I will see how that goes..
