Just saw a Smart Car for the first time today http://www.smartusa.com/

I've seen what happens when a motorcycle hits a car, and its not pretty. I just cannot imagine allowing anyone I love to get into that 400lb piece of chit. I can only imagine how much it gets blown around by tractor trailers.....

We need to open up ANWAR today to keep gas prices from hitting $5 anytime soon and ensure that I don't end up in this half size VW beetle because I can't pay my mortgage.

It's ANWR.

And yes we should drill there, but it's only a future bridge and medium term psychological help. It's not so we can continue to commute solo in freaking Suburbans

As for the Smart Car, perfect for some urban situations. I fail to see the huge issue about it.

I agree. It is time we proclaim ANWAR !!!

Imagine no longer. The SmartCar earned top rating of good for front and side crash protection.

This was all over the news about a month ago. I guess it's easier to assume rather than research.

Why such resistance to small cars? Yes, small car vs huge SUV will have predictable consequences, but why is the perception that the small car is too small, rather than that the big SUV is too big? And what happens when a big SUV hits a bicycle, or a pedestrian? Would people argue that we shouldn't walk?

Perhaps 20% of our miles call for something bigger than a small car with four doors. IMO the silver lining in high fuel prices is that a lot of people are finally thinking about how wasteful we have been when it comes to fuel use.

I don't have a problem with the small cars for going to and from work or in town driving when most of the time it is usually one or two people. Then it kind of makes sense. On the road though I want the comfort and for others with children the laws are requiring the car seats and I don't see where in the small cars you are hardly going to have room for more than 2.

How about a "community" traveller.

Some of the Greenies in Sydney are buying and co-paying for a car (like an 80s Isuzu station wagon/panel van), so that they all have access to a utility type vehicle, but not 1 each.

Do the same with "family sedans" for touring.

Why stop there??? We should drill EVERYHWERE. Every house in America should have at least one test drilling in the backyard. Then we'll go to the moon and Mars and drill there. We cannot rest until every last inch of this planet is drilled.

We have to squeeze every last drop becuase driving a Hummer is our birth right. Is is in the bill of rights, "Thou shalt drive a Hummer and live in liberty"

And we shall driver our Hummers over all those pesky Smart cars and green Prius lovers.

Perhaps you missed the side impact part? You know, the test that simulated a truck/SUV hitting it on the side?

Don't worry about it. Sooner or later anyone who doesn't need an SUV will rethink that "I need to install titanium shields because a meteorite may hit the interior while I'm driving on 3rd Tuesdays of the New Moon" mentality. If their wallet can support their theories and beliefs ..then so be it.

When you have them by the short hairs ..their hearts and mind will follow

I have a Mazda 3, which is not the roomiest of the bunch especially the back seat, but 3 peaople and a child seat can comfortably travel for ling trips, for short trips I had 4 people sitting without complaints.
Its funny how the perception of "need" changes with rising fuel costs. Have you looked at the "People trying to dump SUV's" thread? They also "needed" the comfort and "safety" but now all of the sudden these "needs" no longer exist and the same people that claimed a couple year ago that they would never drive a compact car buy them like hot cakes.

We had 3 children and did fine in a 86 Tempo. It's unlikely that you'll have 3 children in child safety seats at one time (although, for some who "crank 'em out to get it over with", it's surely possible). The minivan sure felt better when going on trips and whatnot ..but it wasn't truly necessary.

In general, though, I've found that SUV owners are driving minivans that aren't minivans. It's mainly an image thing. They use a 12-15mpg extended hood minivan instead of a 24-28 mpg minivan.

Most likely when all their credit cards are maxed out.

Almost all the crude from the north slope goes to Asia. Where do you suppose the crude from ANWR will go? Not to the US. Drilling in ANWR will only make the oil companies more profits. It will not help US fuel prices a lick.
