Just watched a guy on the tube, that towed a newer 2022 vehicle that could not be started and also had no way to put it in neutral.
Yeah all 4 wheels locked up, he did a great job flatbeding it and unloading it.

Can you imagine this thing in your garage and catching on fire, no way can you push it out, very scary stuff.

maybe old vehicles for the win? Reach under, pop off the shifter cable and move it into neutral if things really go south.

This happened to my 2021 escalade years ago. It has the fuel pump module fail and it would not go into neutral. The engine would almost start for a split second just long enough for me to put it in neutral if i was quick but if the door slightly closes it goes into neutral again which it did and had to crank it again. It's the only issue its had and I did ignore the recall notice at first and put it off for too long so i could have avoided all of this but it's still maddening that you can't put it in neutral with the engine off. I already knew I was gonna be subjected to some stupidity with this new suv so i kept my old suv.

Placing a vehicle in neutral usually involves popping off the shift selector or getting under the vehicle and manually moving a lever of some sort.

I don't get it...so it's a GM programming thing to require the engine to be running to get it into neutral? Every push to start that I've had can be placed into N with ignition on, but not started. Battery dead would be a different story but as noted above that's what the shifter release is for.

That's my understanding of how the ZF transmissions are. Sounds simple, but you have to know how.

Yes, especially on the transmissions with an electronic gear selector. You lose power, you cannot shift to neutral using the selector and you have to use a manual selector that’s somewhere on the transmission.

I’m pretty sure all transmissions have to have a way to put them in neutral. So just knowing this would’ve avoided this costly mistake.

Even my 2009 F150 has an electronic lockout for the shifter. There is tiny (and unmarked) cover to remove for the release button.

If not left in 4WD - those can generally be towed from the rear - but flat bed tow trucks can be a problem …

Not with todays fully electronic transmissions . Theres no lever to move.
