The Honda Oil Filter Thread

My local dealer i deal with had one case in stock so I grabbed it. Hes got a big shipment coming in he told me and he says honda ships whatever they have mixed between A02 and 003s but doesn't always get them. Ill buy cases if he gets them if anyone wants to buy them

I couldn't find 15400-RTA-003s locally. However, I think I bought every one I could find online.

Congrats on finding what looks to be an OG media Titanium. I'm surprised and can't imagine many of those left in the 7317 application.

As for 6607 vs 7317, without comparing media types, I'd always choose the 7317 over the shorty 6607. Using the latter is a common quick lube move that I'm not keen on.

To add to my last comment, if I owned a Honda calling for the 9688 application, I'd likely use it but wouldn't feel badly about using the 7317 either. I'm familiar with 2001 Civic which was the first year Honda went to the 7317 application on that model from the 9688. Dealer used the latter for a while until the 7317 size became more available.
I had occasion to remove and cut that OG media Titanium. I didn't post it because the cutting was a trainwreck. It was indeed screen-backed, to the point I couldn't get the dumb thing apart.

I will say, however, that there was no evidence of cleaning in it using the API SN vintage of Euro FS 0w-40.

Right. There's basically only two Honda filter sizes. Older Hondas took the 9688/3593a size (also M1-104 in mobil 1 branding).

Since the late 90s or early 2000s, Honda has uses the taller, skinnier filter known as x7317 (fram) or 4610 (purolator) or 84356 (carquest) or 57356 (wix).
There was actually a TSB about this back in 2002

CAN A SMALL OIL FILTER BE REPLACED BY A LARGE ONE?

SERVICE INFORMATION
For all Honda models, the answer is YES. The 65 mm diameter oil filter is directly interchangeable with the 80 mm diameter filter. Both filters use the same filtration media to do the job, and filter out at least 70 percent of the particles that are 30 microns or larger, and 85 percent of the particles that are 40 microns or larger.

Large filter:
P/N 15400-PLC-004, H/C 6475834 or
P/N 15400-PLM-A01, H/C 6446231
Small filter:
P/N 15400-PT7-005, H/C 3630399 or
P/N 15400-P0H-305, H/C 4908182

And yet they say change it every other oil change?
Honda clung to that early, and never let go
A service is oil, B service gets the filter

Some actual filter efficiency from Honda. As expected, not very efficient.
This also explains why Honda seems quite satisfied with the performance of the bottom of the barrel Fram and is happy to put it out there in a blue dress as an OEM filter.

I'm still waiting to see what Honda does for OEM filters in USA now with FRAM being quite uncertain. Perhaps they start importing en masse the Tenex units from Japan?

you know what would be nice... if Filtech (roki) brought back the A01! one can only hope even though i doubt it will happen
I’m not convinced that the A01 was any better than the Made in Japan Mahle 15400-RTA-003 that’s out there now.

I have a handful of the 003’s, and while they may not have the highest efficiency (like all Japanese OEM oil filters) they have excellent build quality.

The Mahle-tennex filter are beautiful.

I bought several of the baby-blue S2000 filters (Made in Thailand Mahle) and since they don't fit any of my vehicles, I've used them on some donated OCIs where they fit, like most Kias/Hyundais.

I just took one off last week and cut it open after 7k miles and it was beautiful inside. Pleats perfectly straight, even, densely packaged. The filter looked immaculate.

This was the 15400-PCX-306 oil filter (baby blue).

If these filters fit my own Hondas, I'd probably consider running them. (in reality, I'd run the larger PGI, let's be real).
