The Big List of Favorite Engines

I would be glad to put AJ6 heads on my V12, but it just isn't going to happen. I think it may be do-able to modify an AJ6 head to go on one bank, but when it gets flipped over for the other side, it's pretty much impossible.

AFAIK, the original Jaguar DOHC heads for the V12 were discarded in a scrap metal bin after Jaguar decided to go with the SOHC setup.

However, wikipedia has a picture of a V12 installed in the XJ13 and claims it is DOHC, and it may be. It sure looks like SOHC to me, but it definitely has different heads than are on my V12 - the plugs on my V12 set on the inside of the Vee, and on that engine they are on the outside of the heads, so who really knows ....

edit: in thinking about the different plug location, that could just be one of the differences between the old SOHC cylinder heads, and the newer "high efficiency" or HE SOHC heads. My car has the HE heads. I can't say as I've ever seen the non HE heads

For sure! 1000+HP reliable stock? YES PLEASE!

Win, wasn't as close as I thought. According to Norgel Thorley's book, the 2.9L AJ6 was a single cam and the engine as a whole was closely based on the 5.3L twelve.

You are correct sir!!!

the engine to make the most power as a race engine, but was made as mild engine from the factory. the 392 chrysler 1957-1958. would take a aa/fd to 6. sec in 1/4 mile.

So many to choose from....

I always liked the way a Pontiac V8 sounded

My '96 Mustang GT's Modular sounded great too....It didn't do anything great. But it sure sounded good not doing it.

I also loved the way that the C30 in the Acura NSX ran and sounded. It would switch over to the big cam lobes and the intake was right behind your head. What a sound. It did everything the BMW M1's M88 did and you could actually buy one. It did everything the Ferrari 328's engine did, and parts don't fall off of it.

But as much as I despise the Desmodromic maintenance rituals, I think I am fondest of Ducatis......when they run right. The 916 was a torture rack to sit on but the engine...sound, power delivery, POWER!!!! all perfect. Then it would hack up a fuel injection computer or something else so it loses on reliability but everything else was there. Glad it wasn't mine but I wish I had owned it if that makes any sense.

I-6's have perfect primary balance and it really shows. Properly built, they are the ideal automotive engine. Fewer parts, lighter weight, smoother, same power.

I'm not sure I could pick a favorite engine. Economy, power, reliability, state of tune, cost all play a role.

I have experiance with three that really stand out...

VW Flat-4 (Air Cooled) From a mechanical nerdiness standpoint it is my favorite. Reliable, efficient, and simple. If longevity is the best gauge of good design then this is a winner. Basic design unchanged from the 1930's to the 2000s...

Jeep 4.0 I-6... A real truck motor... That concept is almost gone.

Chevy 4.3 (or 350 SBC) Another real truck motor. I miss seeing dynos of trucks making power at 2200 RPM instead of 5600...

to: LS2JSTS my 392 hemi will improve more horsepower from stock to race set up than any engine. the race set up 392 made about 1600 horse power. when has your engine taken a AA/FD
to 6.0 sec 1/4 mile?

The BOSS 429 in PS/MM trim makes about 2200HP naturally aspirated.... on gasoline. And runs bottom 6's at well over 200MPH.

283 cubic inches, OEM Teksid block with coolant flowing through it, OEM Ford GT 4V heads with basic porting & valve-job, OEM forged Cobra crank, ~2800 horsepower on gasoline.

i do NOT beleave a ford 429 can make 2200 hp with out nitro. i am not talking about today, i talking about 1960s. why? cause the cam makers are making much better cams now days. i saw the ford so so called race engines in the 60s in a AA/FD they didnt have a chance. sure if the cam makers made a NEW cam for the 392 it would put out lots more power than they did back then.

my point is the 392 started from the factory as a mild engine. the ford engine you are talking about was made from the factory as a RACE engine. sure when they make a full race engine then its a race engine. chrysler made race engines. I WAS NOT TALKING ABOUT A RACE ENGINE. I WAS TALKING ABOUT A MILD ENGINE TURNED IN TO A RACE ENGINE. i went to the NHRA worlds points finals in Tulsa, from 1966 to 1969. i saw some ford race engines in AA/FD they did not win much in that class.
