The 10 percent solution

Oil coolers in the RX8 keep 2 quarts of the old stuff and it's not fun getting it out (I'm told). A 7 quart system is replaced with 5 new quarts of oil each oil change. And it takes effort to get the 5 out. Just draining from the pan gets only 4.

And some people wonder why I change it every 3k.

I doubt anyone should worry about a few ounces.

Were talking about 10% left-over oil....less than 1/2 qt in a 4qt oil pan! This is a problem? Please explain why you quest to replace 100%. It's mechanical non-issue since replacing the oil and filter provide all the protection you need....new oil replaces the additives and the new filter captures the contaminants.

I use 6 qts.

Bryan: If 0.8 quarts is left behind, then 6.0/6.8 = 88%. I use 6 quarts as well since 5.5 quarts only gets halfway to the full mark.

I had a friend named John in the 70's who tried to get every last drop of oil out of a black 72 Caddy. This is going to make you want to puke, but he drained the oil jacked the beast up in a position where all the oil would come out, and......started the engine and gunned it a few times until the noise was unbearable. Then he would fill it with fresh oil. Worst of all, it wasn't even his car-a friend of his entrusted him with all the maintenance on the car.
Needless to say this poor 472 started to smoke rather badly, and disappeared within a year. What a JO

Amen my brother! That`s exactly how I do my oil changes. Set everything up,drain the old stuff out for about half an hour, and have a couple of cervezas while it`s draining.
