Ten Worst Automotive Fads

I don't agree that digital dashes or huge SUVs should be on that list.
This is one of the worst automotive fads from my time that I can remember:

I guess I'll agree with 1,2,3,4,5 & 9

Decals are OK if used sparingly and in good taste A huge NISMO sign or Ford symbol in the rear window of an F-150 are stupid. They should have come up with something more like making large badging for something that really doesn't matter, like engine sizing with < 2 liter engines, and the whole "Touring" and "Limited" bologna (do people really care what interior trim package you overpaid for??)

I don't really fin carbon fiber accents in an interior that offensive. To me, that's an overreaction to something people actually bought. A "fad" has to be popular at some point, doesn't it?

I disagree with the digital dash bit. I have a car with one and I really don't see what the big deal is. It's just an area where the car gives you information. Maybe they should have went with instrument panels that give you 8,000 pieces of information (when all you really need is speed and fuel).

I would have added fuel doors that needed a key to unlock, TPMS systems (and the corresponding "idiot" lights), "ground glow" lighting systems, and the oversize rims (that are a current fad).

The early digital dashes were as bad as they described, and nothing much like the new ones. An Uncle of mine had a Chrysler Lebaron back in the 80s complete with one of the early digital dashes like they describe, as well as the Knight Rider like talking computer ("you door is ajar... your door is ajar"). The problem with the digital cluster in the Lebaron was that the speed readout was in digital numbers only, and it updated so fast that unless you were maintaining a fairly constant speed, is was either useless or required much more of your attention than it should have.

I also think huge SUVs are one of the best additions to that list, if for no other reason than no auto fad has caused so much economic woe when the bubble burst.

Decals are more hit or miss. Sometimes they're well done, but too many times have I seen a sub-10k (when it was new) Sunfire with the entire back window proclaiming it - as though there weren't so many on the road nobody would know what it was otherwise.

Agree on the carbon fiber accents - I didn't even realize that was a fad until I read it there.

Ground lighting and oversize rims would be worthy additions too. I'd also add aftermarket HIDs, if only because you rarely notice them when they're done right, but too often its a hack job that's either blinding or much more distracting than anything on the road at night should be.

Man I LOVED the digital dashes and the sexy voice alerts ;^) My 86 300ZX turbo had them :^)

Now...........the spinners (those are absolutey comedic!),who the [censored] came up with that [censored]??????? Carbon fiber just looks plain cheap. And THEE one that should be the grossest fad of all,4-door sedans that are jacked up like 4-wheel drive monster trucks with rubber band tires,um,that`s plain ignorant! Oh,and the glue-on fake turbo vents on the side of cars.

Haha, right on! Especially on the Pepto Bismal pink Impalas with the spinners, rubber band tires, the 4-wheel drive monster truck suspension, with the word "IMPALA" written in huge letters that covers the entire side of the car! Hahahahahaha! What`s sooooooooooo freakin funny,is that those people actually think it looks good!,when in reality everyone with half a brain is making fun of them!

Landau ?

I'd cross brands for one of these...yeah it's a site selling collectible Aussie cars.

Fake wood ? I always wanted a woodie (fake), with nasty drivetrain, slapper bars etc.

Automated belts never made sense to us Aussies...why WOULDN'T you wear a belt...unless you had a medical reason, which you can get a doctor's letter for anyway.

Spinnaz...never understood the term until I saw a set here in town (Sydney driver driving through)...what a joke.

Windshield decal I sort of did...a solid black paint to cut down overhead glare...the carerra stickers looked silly...especially on Holdens.

Carbon fibre ? Why not, wallnut and leather are OK too.

Digital Dash ? Had a late 80s falcon with one, and it was a pain. Don't mind some of the current digital information panels 'though.

Huge SUVs ? Suburbans didn't sell well here, but if I see a suburban, or a Ram, or the occasional big ford, there's usually something hanging off the back of it like a horse trailer...they can afford the fuel.

Fake vents...just fake.

I wish doof-doof stereos became a long forgotten fad, along with body lift kits with big tyres that have half an inch suspension travel on the bumpstops...and aerials

What are people thinking? -That this looks good or serves some purpose other that looking idiotic?

I'm glad ricers are almost gone. I've had my Z since I was 16 when The Fast and The Furious came out. Oh how many years I've sat at red lights with these morons with [censored] cans revving at me. NO your Honda is NOT, repeat, NOT a race care and can not beat me. Bring it to the track, bub.

@ms21043:

I won't quote your post as I wouldn't want to make anyone throw up a second time. I'm still cleaning mine up

Why would someone take a perfectly good car and do THAT to it? I can understand tastes vary but that is just utter destruction of the car for any practical use.

Must be nice to have that kind of money to flush, I guess I should be hoping to have a car like that

Imagine how much I could throw at my DD

My first car had a vinyl top, a '73 Ford Pinto.

I don't mind vinyl tops, but I don't miss them either.

Yep, must be nice. Those clear wheels are $5000+ each! $20k just in wheels and you end up with a hideous and useless thing like that, I don't get it. You know, I feel bad for these people when I see them driving around. They think they're cool but they only serve as comedy entertainment for most people who see them. The drivers of these things look so serious when they should be wearing clown outfits while behind the wheel.

Those belts were a stop-gap measure where the car makers took advantage of a loophole in the law that was going to require airbags. One interpretation of the 'passive restraint system' was an automatic belt - a much cheaper alternative than an airbag.

Those things that make the car look like its squinting? Those are awful! The worst ones are the ones where the kid painted them on, and they're not symmetrical.
