Technically It's a Golf...

GTI is not a distinct model, it is a trim level. Lupo GTI, Polo GTI, Jetta GTI etc...

Not by how VW of USA does it.

Golf (hatchback) is a model with trim levels of S and Wolfsburg offered.
Golf GTI is a model with trim levels of S, Sport, SE and Autobahn.

VW calls those 'Trims'

VWoA call them trims, VW does not.

In any event, some nice discounts on these. Too bad you have to go up fairly high trim on the GTI to get the autonomous braking (in the Driver's assistance package.) I believe the autonomous braking is automatic only. In the 'regular' Golf, I think it can be had in the Wolfsburg trim that is not too expensive.

If the website is to be believed, autonomous braking comes on manual trans cars as well.

Update!

Been 4 months and 2600 miles of driving for the GTI! So glad I opted for the GTI trim rather than just the regular Golf, but I think now it was just for the engine. The 2.0 turbo in itself has been great, but I've grown to absolutely hate the clutch/transmission combo. Now, I love driving manual, but this combo is numbing! The clutch in itself is light, which is great for stop and go, but I live in the mountains. What the heck is traffic? The 1-2 shift is ALWAYS clunky, I'm attributing this to the clutch delay valve. Never had that issue in my MKV Jetta. Mentioning the valve, not that you should, but you cannot launch the car worth anything. Is it driver error? Maybe. The gear ratios, eh. You like lugging the engine? No? You like higher rpm's than you should? No? You got no choice, pick one because that's what you get Jack. If you drive freeway alot then you're golden. But if you live in an area like me where 45-55 is common, you're searching for the right happy medium to no avail.

Back to the 2.0 TSI engine. In itself it's a thing of beauty; it can be tame or an animal in a couple seconds. Boost likes to really kick in at about 2800 in normal mode, or a couple hundred earlier in sport. Pulls great to about 5500 then it starts petering out. There's been discussion about turbo lag in these cars with the manual. Unfortunately it's true, but if you shift at the 5K mark quickly you don't loose too much, but see the above about the transmission. Good luck getting that good fast shift... There is good to it though; it is actually fuel efficient even if you don't baby it.

This is roughly 80 miles of toll road highway @ 80mph, the rest is backroads between 45-60.

Overall so far

For 210hp and 260ish tq that is not bad, considering I don't baby it at all.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase, but a couple annoyances along the way. Once warranty is up it will be getting a single mass flywheel/clutch combo and either a Unitronics or APR tune.

I was next to a middle aged guy in a green Miata yesterday and he clearly was not having a good clutch day: every time he started from a stop, he and his passenger's heads would rock wildly...makes me appreciate automatic transmissions in traffic.

There is nothing more frustrating than an uncooperative clutch pedal...ugh.

IMO for the lifetime reading so far that's impressive ! For us metric folks it's about 7.2L/100KM. With my R I'm at about 10.1 L/100KM lifetime with a best of 9.8 (I don't know what the on-board computer displays, this is from receipts/recordings and fully), no real extended highway runs yet about 50:50 local/highway, with about 2500KM on the car so far.

So I figure I'd give a roughly 1.5 year, 7600 mile update. Been driving the car approx 3 days a week depending on weather as I've changed job, about 46 miles round trip and have been returning stellar economy (IMO) roughly 36mpg according to the computer. Lifetime economy has risen from 32 to 34mpg as of late. This is on 45/55mph roads, minimal interstate highway runs. Run 93 during the summer and 89 during the winter. Got its first does of fuel treatment today, just because the lack of top tier fueling stations around here.

I still have gripes about the transmission ratios, but have adjusted pretty well. The power still makes me giggle like a little girl, especially going up the mountain with ease (can't say the same about the 90hp S10...).

So far I've changed the oil twice, once at 1400 and the other at 6500 miles. Been one of the easiest vehicles yet to change. Both have been with Edge 0w40.

Interior has held up so far. I know some people have issues with the side bolster prematurely.

No dealer trips at this time (knock on wood!)

No mods done, only thing done was window tint:

Overall I would definitely buy it again, and again.

If I ever consider an FWD car again, the GTI is at the top of my very short list.

I love my old MKV, and the new ones are top on my list too for when the time comes. But I am bummed by the lack of new 3 door versions for the U.S market.

I guess I could get over it, but for me a GTI should not have 5 doors.

I'm sentimental I guess..

I drove a GTI earlier this year. It had the quick shift DSG which was way faster than one can shift. It let out the between shift f@rt which was entertaining. the delay after gear button press was probably 0.25sec which was decent, but once the gear change started it was pretty much instant.

Honestly, I thought that 210hp would feel faster. They want a $34K after tax for those up here which for me is too much. Especially when I would be using the car just for commuting on a lazy straight highway.
