Had a quick search but nothing came up on here. Found some Takumi 0w30 at a very reasonable price down here in NZ. Has anyone here heard of it before? It's made in Japan, group 4 & has a VI of 174 but only ratings are SN & GF-5. Apart from that it doesn't look too bad but I'd appreciate BITOG thoughts on it.

Only English site I could find didn't have MSDS info http://www.tau-trade.com/gen/page_takumioil.do

There have been some frightening VOA's on unknown brand oils in the US.

If I couldn't establish the brand quality, I wouldn't touch it.

Japanese links mentions PAO, Esters and gr2 and 3. Also that they try to make their oils more affordable.
Russian link says same about PAO and Ester bases. Hybrid line recommended for severe winters and new hybrid cars. This line positioned as energy conserving oils.
Looks like nice legit oil. Most are SN rated.

Also from Rus website. This brand was making oil since 1954 only for Japanese domestic market.
Since that time not a single complaint on that oil. I guess official.
They use additives from Lubrizol, Afton Chemical, Infineum. And add more detergent to exported oils.

I love the metal cans they come in!

There are two 0w30 versions.
One version has a higher 183 VI and HTHSV of 2.98cP classified as an oil for Hybrid applications.
The one with the lower 174 VI is heavier but I don't see a HTHSV listed.

Takumi Oil appears to make some quality products.

The Mazda 5w30 I used to sell came in cans like that. It was also made in Japan. Never found out who by though.

The 0w30 I've found here is the 174 VI. Considering I've only managed to track down 2 other 0w30 in the country, Amsoil & Motul which are over twice the price of Takumi I think I might give this a try in my car & the other halfs.

Picked up 9L in the weekend for my car & the Mrs'. Hope to get them done this weekend if I can find the time. Looks shiny anyway

I paid NZ$90 for 9L, or in your language @ US$75 for 9.5qt.
To put that into comparison, 5L of Mobil1 5w30 retails for NZ$92 over here. I did get the Takumi direct from the distributor so that cut out the middle mans mark up.

Well I finally got around to servicing both cars. Did the Mrs' about 2 weeks ago & mine at work Saturday morning on the hoist (my cars to low to climb around under in the drive way). Both motors are loving it so far. Run much smoother & rev out better than they did with previous 40 weights in them. The corolla had 10w-40 in it

& I had given 0w-40 a go after usually running 5w30. So its thumbs up for Takumi so far. May look at getting a UOA done at 6K mi
