I have got a kia rio 2015 1.4L (naturally aspirated).
I have only changed it once at 40k miles.

ODO is 240k miles

The fuel is relatively clean where i live.

The car was having the error code above mentioned and it rattles when i increase the load at idle (such as when turning on the AC)

Was this an easy replacement? Some fuel filters are sealed or very difficult to replace
We had to take off the back seat, open the fuel tank cover (located under the back seat), take out the fuel pump, remove the fuel filter and the fuel strainer along with O rings for the fuel filter, then replace the fuel filter (part costs about $20).

The filter is kind of integrated with the fuel pump but it can be done with relative ease.. just watch out for fire hazard as you work it.

It has been said, always check the basics first.
You are very correct. This is the academic way of doing it. The older filter shown is heavier than the new one by a factor of 4 even though we have emptied it of the fuel.

always check the basics first.
Let me tell you one.
I added a 15 oz. bottle of Red Line Complete Fuel System Cleaner SI-1 and got a P0171 (lean, bank 1) code.

Immediately I thought of each possible cause listed for P0171 in code look-ups; plugs, fuel filter and intake air leaks.
Then, since I was about to embark on a 700 mile, all highway drive, I got the brilliant idea to just chill and see what happened as I continually diluted the treated fuel.

I brought my scanner with me and cleared the code every time I stopped the car.

Voila', the light failed to return half-way through the trip.

Will I ever use Red Line CFSC SI-1 again? Hmmmm.....would you?

200,000 miles on a fuel filter seems like pretty good life.
I can't tell from the pic is the filter on the inlet or outlet side of the electric fuel pump?
