So I've recently been reading a lot that MC 5w20 is a very good oil. I'm talking about the synthetic blend. What makes this a synthetic blend? Is it just a name? What I mean is if Pennzoil YB is a group II+ oil, and group III is considered a synthetic (unless I'm mistaken), then how are they distinguishing this as a synblend. OR is the Pennzoil YB like a synblend too, just not labeled as such? Just a thought

You could call YB a near synthetic or synthetic blend if you want to.. this is nothing but symantics when we are looking for performance. The CP Blends are group II+III to meet performance needs while YB seems to come from a single very well refined base oil.

In reality the differnce is academic. the performance is about the same and additive quality and overall synergy determines perfoemance more than base oils once we crss over the Grp II barrier.

Valvoline says their blend is 30% synthetic, added to their conventional base stock.

I have never seen any manufacturer state their blend is only 10% synthetic.

synthetic blend is a blend between base stock oil and synthetics. i am not positive on the percentage of base stock and synthetic in the blend though - a common oil listed for people who do around town short trip driving. not sure why its recommended for that use - if someone knows please educate me on that. my only guess the base stock oil warms up more quickly being synthetic oil has higher heat properties but with lubricity protection of synthetic.
