I was doing my weekly food shopping at Wallyworld. I did my usual trip down the oil aisle. I was floored when I saw the Valvoline Synpower 5 quart jugs marked at $25.00. Who is going to buy Synpower for $25.00 when the king of synthetic oils, Mobil 1 is priced at $24.50 right next to it?

i dont hate bandwagons, but i too would gladly pay an additional 50 cents to have synpower over mobil 1. snypower is almost always more expensive then mobil 1 at my local wal mart.

Or if like my WM you have Syntec next to it for $21 a jug. Even though I'm not a Castrol user I would for that price...

Honestly, I would probably purchase the Valvoline even if it were a few more dollars than the Mobil 1. I have just never been a fan of Mobil 1 but I have always had great faith in Valvoline products. Even with what some consider a "weak" additive package, it continues to produce excellent numbers. Obviously, they are doing something right with the base oils or there are additives that can not be picked up on a VOA.

That's awesome, M1 is like $45 here. If SynPower were always $25 it would be one of the only oils I used.

Unfortunately we're seeing the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a resurgent, and ugly retail oil pricing trend - thanks to QE2/inflation. I'm guessing that every repriced tag we will soon see on the oil shelves will reflect a very significant (minimum 10%) uptick in cost. And it will affect every single brand.

Don't worry though, if they don't suck the $$$ out of you in the oil section... just wait until you stroll over to the food aisles, or the gas pumps (now well over $3/gal. and moving up).

Yeccchhh!

For the last 2-3 years the oil I bought the most was Synpower from Kragen/O'Reilly on sale with rebate, the final price after tax and stamp(s) usually about $1/qt or less.

I would too.

If that's the reason behind selecting a product, LOL!

Agreed. A few dollars is nothing, but when you can pick up really good deals, the drama of selecting an oil off the shelf soon goes away. After building a cheap stash, it becomes more like, "which oil to use first" instead of which to buy.

It's a shame Valvoline can't keep 5w-40 on the shelves, or even MaxLife synth. I believe the specs drive up the price, taking out of jug pricing. Mobil has it right with their spec oils and the HM oils w/o spec. Maybe if Ashland had MaxLife synth in jugs w/o specs...

They do have 0w-20 at retail around here though.

Walmart had MaxLife full synthetic in 5QT jugs few years ago. O'Reilly has Synpower 5-10W30 in gallon jugs.

The choice of my oil stash is first in first use.

Honestly, i dont understand the buy a 5quart jug at walmart craze, i buy my oil @ parts store when its the flavor of the month and buy 2 deals, ie the last oil i bought was 5quarts edge and a bosch D+ filter for $32 x2 as i doubled it, thats like getting a $13 filter for a few bucks.....every other much you can find such a deal, to me thats a GREAT deal

Yep, the initial signs of SN/GF-5 price increases going into effect. The other brands are sure to follow. Someone has to pay for it; it's the consumer.
