Switching to GC...Autozone deal

I just bought some two days ago and it is dated M09 meaning it was made this year. It still says "made in Germany" on the back of the bottle.

And all this Green vs Gold is worrying about nothing! I just recently posted some pics here on bitog of my 117k mile BMW valvetrain and it is spotless with cam lobes that look new. This car has had a steady diet of Gold GC for nearly 100k miles and I haven't been exactly tender with car.

Use Gold GC with confidence!

Cheers!

Stopped by my local AZ this AM... Not a drop of GC to be had. In fact they were pretty much picked clean of the popular viscosity Syntecs.

For giggles, I dropped by my Advance Auto and they had a big floor display with 5w30 and 10w30 Edge... at $7.99 a quart. Yikes.

How do you know that? The original GC used to say made in Germany on the bottle, but now it says "European Formula." I thought I read on another thread that this formula that is found at many AZ stores might be not be the same oil as the "Made in Germany" GC. Very interested. thanks.

All the new stock at local stores here are still made in Germany.

My local Strauss Auto has 30+ cases (full) of GC sitting around.

The new GC does say "European Formula" on the front label. But the back of the bottle does say "Made in Germany" - its in small print, but definitely there. I won't buy it unless it says "Made in Germany" on the back label.

Just picked up quarts # 16-20 and a 4th K&N oil filter for my gas Dodge. Hopefully they re-stock on 0w30 as I want to pick up 10 more quarts before the sale ends in early April.

That'll make 30 qts of GC and 6 K&N oil filters for about $170.

$24.99!!!

I am curious....Does Autozone have any GC that is 502 VW rated for this pricing, or is it just the American stuff?

My local Autozone ran out of GC. I was at a local Pepboys with a flier from AAP so that Pepboys would price match on GC, but they did not carry K&N filters, but there was a special on Syntec with fram filter for 27.99. There was a guy who got into the conversation between me and the clerk. He said something like "why would you or what kind of car would ever need 0W-30." I said, "it flows better when it's cold." He and the clerk said, "it's not cold. 5w30 should be fine." I'm thinking who is he? Then he told me I could find 0w30 syntec at AAP and I should ask for 0w30 since they are in the back. He said he was at AAP like two times during the day. Duh??? "Don't you understand where I got my flier from? It's from AAP." And I'm 100% sure AAP does not carry 0w-30. He probably thought that syntec is at AAP, but he never knew about AAP not carrying 0W-30
It seems like 0W-30, made in Germany, is not too significant to many people.
Is there anyone who is using GC in their domestic or imports other than European cars?
I've been using mobil1 5w30 and 10w30 in my toyota and volvo but I certainly want to try GC in all my cars.

I think one key driver here for most avid GC fans is the fact that CG is supposed to be a true synthetic (no Group III base). Mobil-1 0w40 European formula is the closest M1 product and is also full synthetic. Both carry additional anti-wear additives to withstand long drain intervals to meet BMW's new extended drain requirements. I used to use M1 5w30 and 10w30 in my previous volvos and had great results, but after learning that those products were not full synthetic (regardless of what the label says), and acquiring my BMW last year, I've switched to Castrol full synthetics... GC for the Bimmer, and the new Edge 5w30 for my new volvo.

Most people you talk to who dont follow this site or dont understand modern synthetics dont get it with 0w30 and especially in the case of GC. If you look at its chart it flows down to -40F but has a viscosity that is thicker than most other 0W-30s or 5w30s at high temperature and a flash point that only other Group IV or V synthetics achieve. This info along with very unique UOA characterists provide evidence that it is a Full Synthetic and not a Group III based oil. For the price ($5 per QT on sales including a K&N filter) make it great deal.

Based on these unique characteristics and the fact that it has very consistent and great UOAs is why I considered using this oil even in GM vehicles that call for GM 6094M which this oil does not carry. However, if you look at the PDS, it does have the GM LL-A-025 and LL-B-25 ratings, which are the specs if you bought a GM car in Europe you would expect a top synthetic to achieve. It also exceeds alot of other very tough reatings including the MB 229.5 and BMW LL-1. These are tougher standards for engine protection than anything currently required in the US. The only possible trade-off is that it does not include friction modifiers so you may give up a MPG or two but that appears to be a YMMV thing here.

The fact that it is a 0w30 is only one reason to use it, its hot performance, sheer stability and add pack are other good reasons.

yeah I noticed AAP had it for 24.99 so they priced matched at Autozone :)

I hate the new 09 bottles. While the foil seal is nice, just another temporary trap for oil exiting the bottle.

Price dropped here, but it was only apparent that the price dropped when I checked out, the old price was still on the shelves.

I just purchased two sets for $24.99 each.

4 quarts of 5w20 and K&N Filter for my daughter's Toyota Yaris.

6 quarts of 5w40 and a Purolator Premium Filter for my son's VW Rabbit. (Since they didn't have the K&N filter in stock, they evenly swapped out the Purolator filter for the K&N.) Also, the 5W40 is the VW502 approved.

Interesting, but the Purolator filter has printed on the side, manufactured in Germany.

Went to my local AZ and they had price matched AAP's $24.99. Grabbed 5 quarts and a K&N filter. I'll probably use it for the next OCI in my Stratus (quite awhile yet, I only have 1,000 miles on the Q-Horse I put in there a few weeks ago).

Alot of folks dont understand how they make their grades. I try to tell them that GC is thicker than most 30W out there. Either way as long you know whats right is all that matters.
