Currently run the older spec tire for my '04 Neon a 185/65R14 instead of the stock 175/70R14. They did not change the speedo for the new size as it is the same as the other 185/60R15 tire.

So yeah I changed but still a factory size (at least it used to be before my year)

2007 Chevrolet Silverado: OEM 245/70R17, running 275/65R17. They look better and are only slightly taller so the speedo is still accurate.

So far only the Malibu is using non-OEM tires and they're the same size as what was on them from the factory.

I did have a '79 Impala that used a different size, sorry, I don't remember the difference, but I do remember that the speedo was about 3mph off.

1991 Lexus LS400
placard is 205/65R15
on car 215/55R16

A while ago, we had an old Mercedes 380SL that the PO put 205/70R15 tires on 15" wheels when OEM was 205/70-14, and the proper size was 205/65R15. We changed the tires to the right ones. Costco did give me some flak when we changed tires on it, I was able to get the size OKed.

I was recently at Wal-Mart trying to get some tires mounted. My tires were 195/60-15 and the placard said 205/60-15. They would not mount them.

They claimed that they would only mount what was on the placard, period.

they do that purely for lawsuit reasons. they cant go wrong with sticking to the placard. kind of a CYA thing.

In this particular case, WalMart was exactly right.

The tires you tried to put on were lower in load carrying capacity than the placard. This could lead to a load related tire failure and sometimes the results are tragic.

It would be a very simple thing for your heirs' attorney to point this out - open and shut!

2005 Toyota Corolla XRS
Oddball 195/55-16 OE tires
Replaced with 205/55-16 Eagle F1 AS

No problems. Speedo is actually right on (according to GPS). And they claw through the snow pretty well.

On my D150 it specs 235-75r15. Im running 31x10.5x15. No changes in suspension. Filled in the fenders and looks better. Speedo reads a little bit slow and off line is softer.

My other cars use an outdated sizing system so they use non-stock sizes. On the coronet i have 255x60x15 on the back and 195x75x15 on the front. Dart has 195x75x14 all around.

Yeah, when I worked at a WM TLE in 2007, there were no exceptions to this rule. The techs in the garage used to love it, B/C a LOT of people would bring in the wrong size of tire and want them put on. We'd take one look at it, see it was the wrong size, and just back the car out of the shop. Saved us the work!

It was one of the few areas the store management really backed us on - a lot of customers got really angry, and demanded we put the tires on, NOW. We'd just 'Sorry, wrong size of tire. Can't do it.' and walk away.
