I was wondering, who runs tires of a differnt size other than what is on the placard of the vehicle. If so what is the size recomended on the placard and what do you run? If you have it handy or can think of it. Thanks in advance for everybody's response.

Vehicle A. Placarded E78-14
-E78-14's on 4 corners at 26psi fr, 28rear.
-P195-75-15 on 4 corners. 35psi
-P205 70r14 on 4 corners. 38psi front 36psi rear
-P205 75r14 (snow tires) on the rear and P205 70r14 on the front. 34psi rear 36psi front.
-P215 70r14 on the rear, P205 70r14 front. 34/36psi
-P215 70r14 on 4 corners. various iterations of 34-38 psi depending on what I was looking for.

Vehicle B. Placarded E78-14.
-E78-14s on 4 corners until about 1983. Still have a bias ply spare in the car that I HAVE used (oh noes!!!) =-) with a radial tire on the same axle. No weirdness observed-incl 1/2 hour highway commute.
-P215 70r14 on 4 corners. 36psi.
-P215 70r14 rear, P205 70r14 fr. 36psi.
-P225 60r15 rear. P215 70r14 fr. 36f.32r.
-P225 70r14 rear, P205 70r14 fr. 36 psi f, 34 rear. 32 rear at other times (a night of the stop light drags would be usually set to 32 psi.

Vehicle C. Fullsize pickup. Placarded P205 75r15. I think. Beats me. I think that was on it when I bought it used.
-P205 75r15 front. P255 70r15 rear. 36psi fr. 34 psi rear.
-P205 75r15 front LT235 75r15 rear (snow tires). 36f 32r.
-P255 70r15 all 4 corners. 36psi fr. 34r.
-P255 70r15 front. P235 75r14 rear (snows again). 36f. 32r.
-P255 70r15 all 4 corners, different brand tire, 46psi fr and rear.
-P255 70r15 fr. P235 75r15r. 44psi fr. 32psi rear.
-P235 70r15 4 corners. mixed brand snows. 36f 34r.

Vehicle D. placarded P215 75r15.
-p215 75r15 on 4 corners. 38psi fr and rear (soft wallowy tires at 36psi, not much better at 38psi. Yes, rated 35psi. Ran them 2 years til wore out, even wear across).
-P225 70r15 on 4 corners. 38psi fr and rear.
-P225 70r15 snows on 4 corners. 36psi fr. 34 rear.

I like crisp steering. I hate feeling the rim move from steering input before the tire eventually catches up from a too soft sidewall, hence the higher pressures I run up front. I take my corners fast enough to wear out the tire evenly. =-)
Rear tires in winter at a lower pressure to widen the patch and conform to the icy bits.
Rear tires lower than usual on certain vehicles for better standing start traction.

03 Vue FWD V6. Came with 235/65 R16.

At 30k when the Bridgestone Duellers were half worn out, they started hydroplaning horribly. I looked around online and found others complaining of the same thing. 30k seemed to be when people replaced them.

At the time I couldn't find a economical alternative in that size, so I switched to 215/70. There's more choices now in the original size, but I've never switched back.

the factory size on my mustang was 245/45/17, i ran 275/40/17 on all 4 corners. the car also had coilovers and handled like it was on rails.

the volvo i wont change, dont want to mess with the $$$$ AWD system.

Vehicle 1: '99 F150 Supercab Flareside 4x4. Stock: P235/70/R16 Firestone Wilderness HT Front 35 psi Rear 35 psi. Current: P265/75/R16 Bridgestone Dueler Revos Front 35 psi Rear 30 psi (higher when loaded or trailer towing).

Vehicle 2: '88 Jeep Cherokee Stock: P205/75/R15 Goodyear Vector All Seasons (If I remember right!). Front 32 psi Rear 32 psi. Currently running P225/75/R15 Bridgestone Dueler D695 Front: 30 psi Rear: 30 psi (Interestingly, the tire pressures are located on a sticker in the glovebox and includes pressures for P195/75/15, P205/75/R15, P215/75/R15 and P225/75/R15, although only the first two came stock. Almost like it was expected you were going to put bigger tires on your Jeep!)

On my SRT-4, the factory size is 205/50/17 on a 6" wheel. I am currently running a +0 setup of a 225/45/17 tire on a 7" wheel. The tires are Sumitomo HTR Z3's in an xl load rating. I highly recommend this upgrade, it made a world of difference in handling and doesn't ride bad at all.

Dad's 2000 GMC Sierra came factory with P235/75R-16 tires.

I simply upgraded to the P255/70R-16 tire, which is the tire that GM uses when a truck of that year is fitted with a factory towing package.

There's a better selection of tires in that size, and according to my GPS, the odometer is accurate at 70mph.

On my 2004 Crown Vic its supposed to have 225/60R16. Im running Blizzak's in 215/65R16. I want to get a set of Mustang or Marauder 18" wheels and install some UHP 255/45R18 for summer and leave my winter tires on the stock y-spoke alloys.

hmm. my stock placecard on my RMS calls for 235/70/15s. I run 255/45/17s up front, and 285/40/17s out back :)

I run 195/70/14s on all four corners of the subaru. placecard says 185/70/14s.

My Ranger called for 185/40/14s. I had 27x8.5x14 tires on it :)

Veh A - 97 Isuzu Rodeo bought new
Stock sized rims/tires = 16x6 and P225/75 R16
Fast forward to 3yrs ago, new wheels/tires = 16x8 and LT265/75 R16 Bridgestone Dueler Revo

Truck looks/rides/handles 100% better.

Veh B - 04 Toyota Tacoma 4-dr
Stock sized rims/tires = 16x7 and P265/70 R16
Fast forward to last year, same rims, new tires = LT265/75 R16 Yokohama ATS

New guy here. Great site. Interesting arguments.

My 07 GMC came with 245-70-17 and I am now running 275-55-20 (this was the optional factory upgrade size)

My 09 Scion had 205-55-16 and is now running 215-50-17

I've never driven a vehicle that I did not upgrade tires and wheels on.

I could be in real trouble if they refused to sell me anything but the specified F-70-14's.

On my Cavalier, I have mostly taken the rims in loose with no questions what they came off. I have heard of [censored] like having to have the same speed rating, one of the biggest frauds on the public.

I imagine most places change their tune when you start to walk out the door... Plus I imagine a Mom and Pop place will have some common sense so try one of those. I had to insist on getting the 155/80R13 snows, they listed the usual b.s. reasons to stay stock but they did it eventually put them on. This spring I'm going to buy 4 more 155 snow tires, I have no doubt they are the best size for my car.

My 05 Sentra came with 195/55/16's. I had about 3 choices when my OEM tires wore out. Buy the same Firestone tire that came OEM, or an over priced Michelin, or a bunch of Run-Flats( The Mini uses this size also).

I went up to 205/55/16 instead. Way more selection, and cheaper also.

I love reading the responses to this post. Nice to know I am not the only crazy person with different size tires than on the placard. Keep the responses coming. This is great.

I've always run tires "other than what was stock" on my vehicles and have never run into a tire store that refused to sell them to me.

I find most of them are addicted to selling the stuff they stock.

1976 Ford Gran Torino, placard is unreadable but research indicated the cars came standard with HR78-14 tires.

So since I haven't got a clue where to get them other than Coker, and they charge way too much for common passenger car tires...the car currently has Douglas P205/75R14's on it. In theory, the HR78-14 is supposed to be a P215/75R14 tire. So I'm close. A few brands are available in P225/70R14 but they are typically your mullet tires, Eagles, T/A's, Hoosier almost racing slicks, etc...

If I could buy P215/75R14 tires, I would. Speedo reads fast, indicated 66mph at actual of 60mph (borrowed a friend's Garmin for that).

I did find out that if I change to 16" CVPI steelies, I can run P225/60R16 tires and be much closer to the HR78-14's as far as diameter goes. But then I lose my LTD II hubcaps my wife bought me for Christmas. So fughettaboudit.
