My 03 Crown Vic with 144k miles and no sludge in it regularly burned a quart every 4-5k miles regardless of Dino or synthetic oils used. I'm 4k into my OCI using Supertech syn 5w20 and I've gone through 2.5 quarts. No oil leaks detected. Anyone else had this issue with this oil?

Try a pennzoil synthetic. PP or PU. Some oils jsut get burnt quicker than others, Ive had least consumption with any Pennzoil oil. (PYB before and now I use PP, The new PP)

The best for oil consumption I've used was Mobil 5000 hm.

That sounds best. Either Mobil 5000 HM or M1 HM. Car seemed to prefer it. I was just trying to save a few bucks, see what it got me...

What do you guys think about running 5w-40 in this Crown Vic? Since it being an old cop car with who knows how many idle hours on it, and living in So. Cal with a very hot summer approaching... Or maybe just up it to 5w30 high mileage...

Your modular will still run on a 5W40. I know ones that have 200K miles on them with nothing but bulk 15W40 HDEO their entire lives. I would prefer to use a lighter grade but if you have a consumer a 40 grade can be a good band aid until you either scrap the car or repair/replace your engine.

Back in the day a buddy of mine and I did oil changes for a fleet of 97-98 F150's with the 4.6. We were dumping 20w-50 castrol into them and they didn't seem to run any different. I'm sure they were noisy in the morning lol.

Perhaps valve-stem oil seals started wearing out? Since you live in Southern California, you can run 10W-40, 15W-40, or 20W-50 (in thickening order) with no significant problems other than mainly a few percent loss in fuel economy.

Before I replaced my valve-stem oil seals, it would burn 1 qt every 1 k mi with 15W-40 conventional and 2.5 qt every 1k mi with 5w30 synthetic. After I replaced them, the consumption went down to virtually zero even with 5W-20 or 0W-20, 5W-20 used actually being slightly thinner than 0W-20 used according to my VOAs/UOAs.

I don't believe it's anything with the engine mostly. The oil I was running 4k miles ago was Mobil 5k HM 5w20 and it barely used any oil in 5k miles. The minute I switched to the Supertech it's been eating up oil. I'm just going to cut this OCI short and go back to either Mobil clean 5k HM or M1 HM. Car seemed to like Mobil a lot. The best was the Mobil 1 and almost 10k OCI for the money.

Scored some Pennzoil high mileage 5w30 for $15.97 for a 5 quart jug at Wallyworld. Was slightly cheaper then Mobil HM. I figured since all I hear is good stuff about Pennzoil I figured I would give it a go.

That's a very smart move. That conventional high mileage 5w30 should stop the consumption and also quiet down the engine a lot.
