Fixed the quote for you.....

You only need four quarts, so we're talking about $16 here at most.

Is this Enron math?

~$16 would be the price diff.

Just get Valvoline Dex/Merc Maxlife that gives you a warranty from Valvoline for any Toyota WS. I used it for more than 10 years and it works great in any Toyota including Prius. It is cheaper too, $17 for a gallon. AS a reference, Aisin who makes Toyota transmission also sells ATF6+ which is applicable for Dexron VI, Mercon V LV, Honda DW1, and of course Toyota WS. For older Toyota with T-IV, Aisin sells ATF6. Dexron VI or WS is less viscous than Dexron IIIH or T-IV but it will not getting thinner as Dexron IIIH over 60-90k miles, it is more stable. That's why GM allows putting DexVI for DexIII applications. Toyota and Aisin still prefer to use T-IV because it has higher standards and more stable over time with higher viscosity.

You could always try Redlines D6? Its spec'd for both WS and Dex VI.
No D6 will misbehave on Toyo transmission which calls for WS. I know quite well - don’t go el cheapo in ATF. Sacrifice a dinner and get yourself WS from dealership. No one other than Aisin and Mobil know the chemistry of the soup!! No licensing which is a real PITA with Asian fluids!!

Dawn of the Thread; as mentioned earlier prius eCVT is not a normal CVT; it is basically a gearbox/power transfer unit; there are no conical surfaces with belts. I've run D4 and now D6 in my '04, about 90K total on those two fluids.

If we want to talk about misapplications, we can discuss why Toyota specified an ATF for a gearbox application; That WS must be magic; a great ATF AND has all the necessary "dielectric properties" to serve in an electrical environment.... But what about all the wear metals that end up in the fluid?

Most motorcycles have a stator inside the engine getting splashed with engine oil that makes electricity to run the bike on. And they don't have problems with "dielectric properties."

That said, get the WS spec fluid. Rockauto was cheapest when I needed some.

He probably figured it out 10 years ago.

ST Dex VI runs about $3.77 qt at Walmart. MaxLife a synthetic is about $3.62 qt at Walmart. So both should be much cheaper than Toyota's and Dex IV is probably the best fluid out there. The question is whether Dex VI is truely compatible with WS. I don't remember specifically but Maxlife says it is compatible with Toyota's TS II, Honda ZL1, WS (maybe) and Dex IV, and they say thy stand behind that claim on their website for what that's worth. So this gives credence that Dex IV might be compatible with Japanese transmissions.

I paid extra to go with Valvoline Dex VI, but I have a GM AT and it was probably still cheaper than Toyota's fluid.
BTW-----updated for 2021----It was $6.22 last time I was there for the SuperTech DexVI/Mercon LV. So maybe not such a bargain compared to the Toyota fluid nowadays.

WS has no dielectric properties whatsoever. No transmission fluid in the world does.

In order for a fluid to be a dielectric it’s use requires a pristene environment with no contamination much less metal in solution contamination. Like used in a pole power transformer. Pris trans is nothing but sun gears so you have instant contamination of the fluid with metal.

And what would dielectric help anyway? That infers some kind of conduction is going on in a trans And the fluid being a dielectric will not conduct a winding blow out?
If you have a motor winding that has failed and is leaking voltage your going to have a blowout to ground no matter what’s in that trans. In a Prius trans that’s 500 volts ac at very high current. The fluid is not going to stop that No matter if it’s magical or not.

In a Prius G2 trans the windings do not interact with the fluid.
In a G3 and on the windings are exposed to the fluid for cooling.
Both use WS.

I refer you to the awesome technical reference the Weber Automotive videos on YouTube.

I own 2007 Prius bought new still got it and has had
Redline D6 transmission fluid changes its whole life. Runs great on it.
