Thanks Stevie! That was very interesting and done in "plain english" so it was easily understandable by a non technical person, like me

I don't think those grades are covered under SN+ or d1G2. 5w30 is the upper limit.

I'd gladly run my 2.0T on 5w40 in the summer if I could find any that meets the spec.

So I checked around (Websites) of Castrol, Mobil1, Pennzoil, Valvoline, Quaker State, Rotella, Motul, Total, Pentosin, LiquiMoly, Royal Purple, MaxxOil and Amsoil for both 0W-40 and 5W-40 synthetic oils (only viscosity range I'm interested in running).

Of these, only the Amsoil Signature Series 0W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil (AZF) is SN+ rated. It's also about twice the price (with discounts) from the Amazon/WalMart 5Quart jugs of the other brands I checked.

https://www.amsoil.com/lit/databulletins/g2880.pdf

I'll look into other brands but so far, this is what I found. YMMV.

Amsoil is less expensive with A preferred customer membership, you save 25% off their website price and the membership is $20-$25 USD per year.

AMSOIL Signature Series isn't API approved at all, so it's likely "Recommended for" SN+ applications. That's a significant difference.

on that amzoil marketing brochure what does "Fortified with detergents that exceed the dexos1 gen2 sulfated ash spec" mean

Does that mean it exceeds the allowable SA or what?

I asked them about Dexos and they claim to have tested their oil to the Dexos 1 Gen 2 standard in an independent lab but didn't pay for the certification to have it officially licensed. Given the VOA's of the product it looks like the SA is higher than GM wants but it doesn't seem to be a problem according to the tests that Amsoil has run as required by Dexos 1 Gen 2. That said it's not officially licensed.

That guy has a real good series of YT videos on lots of automotive subjects. I have watched almost all of them. Great info, smart guy, but I could do without the overly excited arm waving and hand gestures.

not bad for a kid. LOL. LOL. if you didnt know. at one point in the 1920s. car makers didnt know what KNOCK was, or how to stop it. they put a Quiortz cover over the combustion chamber. then they could see how knocks worked. i forget who did the first research. but GM rings a bell.

I think this is the best thing out there.

To put it simple the motor is on the verge of hydolock. Not good for engines. It makes you wonder how many bent rods that are present but aren't noisy but can create misfires before failure. I ran a Chevy truck through water with no problems then misfire a week later and surprised to find a warped rod that wasn't knocking yet. Only way I found was I pulled head for what thought was a burnt valve but piston was up but not all the way so I turned engine over then piston went down.

seems VW got that under control unlike others. all manufacturers have various issues but LSPI can be catastropic like a failure in the valve timing. todays cars are more costly as well as troublesome + the $$ saved on gas better be put aside for future repairs or another vehicle. i stick with older less advanced vehicles + since retiring driving miles in a year is as much as i put on in a month years ago, hence mpg's mean little to me! i will never own anything with a CVT for sure, another possible big $$$$ issue. those with deep pockets care less but average joe needs a reliable economical vehicle. my traded VW jetta 1.8T went 200,000 without engine issues + with 275 hp + 300 tq gave me a consistent 30 mpg!!

Perhaps it is but it is not SN+ rated, only SN. But so is the Castrol Edge 0W-40 I'm using now.
