The car comes with a 10year-100000 mile powertrain warranty which I need to read the fine print on. I know nothing about these cars or engines. I thought that I would start out with Mobil 1 5-30 and see if uses any. I have 800 miles on it now.

Suggestions?

Will it be too soon to switch to Mobil 1 at 1000 miles?

If you will tell us what your owners manual suggests for oil & maintenance intervals, I will give you my $.02 worth of oil advice.

according to info from some Elantra-boards, the dealers are REALLY picky about honoring the powertrain warranty when it comes to oil-related prob's.

Because of that, despite all my urges, I've decided to let the dealer run the dealer-oil (Pennz.10/30)in my wife's 2003 Elantra until the 100k is reached, and not do anything "risky", just in case we need to use the warranty. The car is doing fine up to now with the Pennz.10/30 (has 28k miles now...)

I'm sure some other Elantra owners will have more/better suggestions.

Severe use is 3K
Regular use is 7.5

Owners manual states:

For good fuel economy, SAE 5W-20 (5w30) ILSAC GF-3 is preferred regaudless of regional option and engine variation.

Chart shows 5W-20, 5w30 also 10w30.

Nothing else is stated about oil.

Capacity is 4.2 Quarts with filter change.

Also I was thinking about 5k changes to keep me in the safety of the warranty.

I don't think Dealers know any better. My dealer use Citgo 10w30. I change my own oil.

05 Elantra GT is a awesome car. Use anything that is API Approved. I personally use the cheapest oil on the market on my Hyundai Tiburon. super tech... we have the same engine.

Yup, the oil varies from dealer to dealer, my local one uses Mobil Drive Clean 10w30.
Interesting note is that my '04 has the exact same engine as yours, but my oil recomendations in the manual are 10w30 unless in extreme cold, then 5w30. They changed it in '05, because my wife's '05 Tucson that has the same motor also and says like yours does. Just shows they are going for the fuel economy route with the thinner oil.
The dealer has no way of knowing what oil you used in the engine during your oil change without a $400+ oil analysis, which they will not pay for.

I am currently on a fill of GC 0W-30, which I switched to at 6000 miles (1000 mile initial change by me, and 1 free dealer with dino @ 3000 miles) and planning on a 7000-7500 mile OCI (about 5 months), I do mostly highway driving. I also just got some M1 0w30 on clearance @ AZ and will be trying that in a few oil changes. I have been using the stock Hyundai filters, but may be switching to Wix cause my dealers parts dept ticked me off.
On my wife's Tucson, I will be using DuraBlend 10w30 and a 5000 mile (or 6 month) OCI. Will be starting that @ 10,000 miles (2 free dealer oil changes will be done @ about 3500 and 7000, initial change by me was @ 1000 miles) She does a variety of driving, so I am going with the shorter interval using a blend or maybe a Grp III syn (have some Havoline Syn also on sale from Auto Zone).
Both of mine take exactly 4 qts to be full with filter change. Also, watch which filters you get. I was checking out the Super Tech filters, and they are almost 1/2 the size of the stock Hyundai filter. I'm sure there is a part # that fits that is larger, but I have not bothered looking. Fram was also small, but the STP, Bosch, and Wix are the same size as stock.

I'd use M1 5w20 or Castrol Syntec 5w20 & do 5k mile oil changes.

My filter choices would be Mobil 1, Purolator, Super-Tech, or OEM, in no particular order.

I had a 97 tib with the 2.0 but with out the VVT.
I used Mobil DC 10w30 in summer and 5w30 in winter with SuperTech filters. I did 3-4k OCI. The car went through **** and back in 100k miles with out missing a heart beat.
They are good motors and great cars enjoy it. I would use what ever is on sale and just drive the **** out of it.

Just gave my 01 GLS to my daughter. Apparently 5w30 is now recommended for hotter weather than was the case in '01-- I'm sure that the engine hasn't changed, only the recommendation. If memory serves me right, the 5w30 had two different recommendations, one in the book and the other on a web page. One of them had no 5w30 over about 80 degrees (from memory).

My dealer used 5w30 Castrol all year long in all of their cars. I switched from 10w30 SuperTech (5w30 ST burned off slightly) to 5w30 Pennzoil about a year ago and kept it in for the warmest 9 months a year, before that time I kept 10w30 in for 9 months a year. No oil use with the 5w30 Pennzoil with 4-4500 oci's.

Thanks for everyone replies.

Is changing to Mobil 1 at 1000 miles too soon? I have 900 and change on the car now.

Yeah I use Supertech 10w30 and supertech ST6607 oil filter.. I mean the filters are good and only $2.07! Hyundai filters are like $6-$7 I'm not sure If i'm gonig to go back to them even though there good filters.

BTW, if you do mostly high way driving.. do you think expensive oil like the M1 is unneccary? Highway driving does the less harm to your engine. I recommend Dino for your type of driving..

Yeah , My 2.0 takes 4 quarts ... strange thign is my dip stick goes slighty above the "Full" mark.. but the Owners manual saids 4.3 quarts!!

I just can not make myself do 7000-7500 miles on dino. It is a strain on me doing it with syn as it is.
As far a M1 being expensive, I now have 16 qts from the AZ clearance, total is $16, so no, not too expensive. I was planning on staying with GC (pending the first UOA) for as long as possible, but with the M1 I have and 4 free qts of RP I got, GC will not be back in my engine for 35-40,000 miles, unless it goes on clearance @ AZ too.
For the filters, I just don't like the small size of the ST. It could fit inside the stock filter housing. I have 4 Hyndai filters right now that I got for free (2 for a dealer screw up when purchasing) and 2 from coupons the dealer sends out. I also have 1 free Bosch and 2 STP's ($2.99 each, part of the deal to get free oil from an AZ), so I am set on filters for a while also.

nhkid, you should have no problems if you switch to M1 at 1000 miles.
My personal preference is to wait. I would do a 1000 mile oil change with regular dino, then at the next change, go with M1, but again, this is just my opinion.

all these different oils in the manual are confusing!

My wife's 2003 Elantra manual recommends (temp's permitting) 5/30, 10/30, 10/40 and even 20w/50
shocked.gif
yes; 20w/50!!

so I guess this motor is probably designed for moderate to thick oils; I really don't think
xw-20 oils are good for this engine; That's a weight which is specified for Honda/Ford/Mazda mostly...I know other manufacturers are slowly getting to 5/20, but is the beta engine a good candidate for Xw-20 oils? ...I doubt it.
