Subaru Forester 2015 CVT

For those that have drained and refilled the CVT how many QTs of CVT fluid are needed? Amsoil lists the total capacity at just under 14 QTs.

The Amsoil CVT fluid is $56/gallon. Wow!
 
Donald, if you priced on Amsoil website, they have all of the fluid capacities listed for each vehicle if you use their product finder.

Best bet is to measure what comes out and replace it with that, and then fine tune with dipstick.

FWIW, most Subaru boards I looked at say 6 quarts for a drain and fill, just over 13 quarts for a complete fill.
 
Castrol CVT fluid is only $5 qt which is $20 a gallon at Advance Auto Parts

So is Amsoil at $56 a gallon vs $20 for Castrol worth it? I know Amsoil is synthetic, what about Cadtrol.?

Who cares if it is synthetic? CVTs are very sensitive to the frictional properties of the fluid. Too much belt/chain slippage will result in serious issues.
 
Frictional properties in an ATF are controlled more by the additives than by the base oil.

As to quote some of the other posters on the board, oil is oil. It's the additives that make a fluid work for a certain tranny. Lubegard Red and/or Platinum pretty much proves that (not that either of those Lubegard fluids has any place in a CVT, example only

I'm personally still hung up on the OEM color of the CVT fluid for warranty purposes. If warranty is not a concern for you, it doesn't matter.

The newer turbo foresters with the high torque CVT use orange CVT fluid.

The standard CVT's fluid is blue or green, I forget which.

I know I was planning a CVT fluid change on my 2016 Forester base model, but couldn't decide on a fluid. A local transmission shop I've used for other vehicles quoted me $199 for a pan drop and fluid change. In the end, I traded the Subaru in with the factory fluid still in there.
 
No experience with Subaru CVTs.

Did a pan drop and fluid refresh on a 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander @ 93,000 miles.

I used Amalie CVT fluid. The bottle has lots of specs listed.

Years later the transmission is doing fine in relatively severe driving conditions.

The car goes "cross Connecticut" mountains >2 hours each day. That's gotta mean something.
 
My FXT is supposed to use the special orange fluid, but even Subaru dealers get really confused about what to use and I'm pretty sure I got the wrong stuff at my 60kmile servicing. I started throwing transmission codes around 80kmiles and the mechanic made an offhand comment to me over the phone about it having the proper green fluid from 60k while they were fixing the CVT. I realized after I got the car back that he mentioned the wrong color, called back in and was told by an advisor after a long time on hold that everything was OK.
About half an hour later, the mechanic called me directly again and said he was sorry, but I had to bring the car back to him. They were giving me a loaner, so it wasn't a huge deal. I'm sure they finally figured out they were using the wrong fluid, I'll bet any FXT or WRX with a CVT was getting the wrong fluid from that dealer for a long time.
Guess I will figure out how to do the change and buy the right fluid myself, assuming I still have the car in a couple of years.

BTW, the '14 and some '15 FXTs have a problematic CVT design and an updated tranny with a filter added was introduced as a flying change during the production of the '15s. The filter cannot be retrofitted, guess this is my punishment for being an "early adopter"...my CVT warranty was extended to 100kmiles, hopefully any other problems that are planning to show up will occur in the next ~15kmiles or it's going to be on my dime.
Don't believe the 2.5l Foresters with CVTs have this issue, BTW...so strange to me that they were making the NA cars with a manual but it wasn't an option for the turbos.
