String Trimmer and Oil Advice Please

Based on what I am being told from this thread, I am going to go to my local Stihl dealer and see what they have. I dismissed this brand at first thinking they were $400 string trimmers. I did not realize that they have a homeowner line with prices in the TroyBilt range. That makes Stihl affordable. I will head there soon to see what I can find. I also see where if you use the Stihl brand oil or the gas/oil premix that it will extend the factory coverage from 2 to 4 years.

For my use I am liking the idea of the premix gas/oil. Fill the trimmer up and go. No mixing, no searching my local area for 100% pure gas, etc. I will let you know what happens as I find my dealer and see what they have to offer.

Reconditioned Echo SRM-225 for $149 at Home Depot.com right now. My internet is having issues, otherwise I would link it.

New SRM-225 for $199

So the extraction of crude oil and production of gasoline only have sunshine and smiles as a byproduct?

Yup, best way to go. If you buy the small 6-pk of Stihl Ultra Synthetic oil with it, Stihl will double the warranty from 2-years to 4-years. Hard to go wrong there...

^This is great advice! I recommend the FS-94r model. It's lightweight, powerful and solid.

Heck - i've got a little FS-40 that I use as a backup. For the price it's hard to complain about. Always starts right up, and all that the (small lot, city dwelling) average homeowner would ever need.

Alright folks, I done gone and done it.

My wife bought this for me as a Father's Day gift. A brand new Sthil FS 56 RC and a case of Motomix. The dealer gave me an extra Sthil line spool for it. They also showed me how to start it, care for it, and use it. Remember I am new to one of these and all I have known about a string trimmer is old, worn out, and not properly maintained stuff my step dad use to get from a pawn shop. LOL

I know it won't make you think about oil but there are good things in electric trimmers. I always suggest Husqvarna, maybe because I'm Swedish, but they are top 2 machines every day.

Check this video, I do not think you will be disappointed about performance. Maybe too pricy, but keep in mind that you don't have to yapp about ethanol fuel, stale gas, carb rebuilds etc.

Atta boy. You can thank me anytime!!!!

But on a serious note, you're gonna be happy with that Stihl. Good thing is, if you need service or warranty work, it's easy to find a shop. Unlike some other units, like TanCrapa, where one guy said to order it online. When it comes to power equipment, buy it from a reputable shop.

Well, service was also something that I had to consider. The local place that I bought the string trimmer was a small engine/power equipment place. They mainly sold Toro mowers, lawn tractors, and Sthil equipment. The big box store that sold the Troybuilt did not service it and neither would that small engine shop....I asked them. Later in life my new Sthil can be serviced and I can get parts for it. I might not be able to get parts for a unit that I bought from Wally's World or the orange or blue home improvement store. Yes, the up front cost was more than I wanted to spend. However, I think that in the end and over time I will end up saving more money by purchasing a quality unit and fuel/oil mix from the start.

Nicely done, Sir.

Support your local dealer!

Benefits of having a local dealer for repair work:
Nothing to ship out, get your trimmer back faster.
Often they have loaners to keep you going till yours gets fixed.
Parts, extra spools, etc. - all within a close driving distance.
You're helping a local business rather than feeding the big-box stores.

Great post- I very much agree!

O/P- congrats on your purchase! It should serve you well for years to come.

I bought the same unit a few weeks ago and it's way more than enough for my needs.

Alright, so my new toy has been sitting all alone in the garage and I had not seen it sence yesterday. It is raining and I can not use it. BUT, I can start it up. So I push the little bulb 5 times, set the choke for cold start, and pull the handle. The thing started up first pull and once I tapped the throttle the thing just sat and idled. I wait a few seconds to let it warm up a bit. I then give it a little gas. For you TopGear fans out there, this is what I heard.....

I had that same 27 cc engine on my Stihl trimmer that I just sold. The engine rocked, great power, started easily. Great engine. The trimmer itself, not so much. It was a curved shaft trimmer and it sucked. Hard. Glad you bought the straight shaft.
