Strangest Transmission Fluid Leak

While I know this may be better suited for a vehicle specific forum, I figured I'd post it here in hopes someone can help me narrow down the source of my transmission fluid leak.

Problem history--- First noticed this happening last winter, truck would leave a few drops on the ground in the morning. Steadily got worse, but still nothing to cause major concern, maybe an ounce a day or so. Problem cleared up on it's own through no intervention of my own and stayed that way until again it reared it's ugly head about a month ago. It's probably worse this time around, because I can smell it burning on the exhaust when I have the interior fan on at a stop. Still it doesn't leak much and neither my transmission or power steering have needed top-ups. Both are being checked correctly and remain at normal levels.

The fluid is being spread all over the suspension and drivetrain components on the passenger side of the vehicle. How this is happening I have no idea because I cannot find any certain hose or connection that is leaking. The fluid is also present up top in the engine bay, in the passenger side wheel/fender well area. It looks almost as if it's dripping down the fender well into the components underneath. I have no idea what's going on but it's driving me nuts.

I've compiled some pictures which can be found at http://www.wicks.com/Unrelated/tr/

Some of the pics are hard to identify. Some were taken from up top around the battery, some from underneath. Everything from the passenger side of the engine block to the drivers side is clean, no fluid there. Transmission pan is clean. The fluid spot show in my garage is of 1+ month of leaking, so it looks worse than it actually is.

Please help!

Okay I see a suspect hose and I have no idea what it does, where it comes from, etc.

Initially I thought it was a brake line because it's in that area. Since I have the brakes removed, it's obvious it's not a brake line. It goes from the front of the truck, near the radiator winds its way past the shock and ends in the rear of the steering knuckle. It's about a 1/4" hose.

It's in the dead center of where all this leaking is happening at. Pics at http://www.wicks.com/Unrelated/t/

I agree with Tom. Degrease it and have a look when it's all clean. You also may want to get some UV dye and a light after you clean it if it's not immediately obvious where the leak is coming from. Good luck!

Alright I've seen it all. I found the source of the leak and it is coming up through one of the wiring harnesses, through the insulation and dripping down from above. I'm not kidding and as strange as this sounds, I double checked several times.

What's even crazier is the wiring harness starts down below somewhere and comes UPWARD to where this is dripping near the passenger fender in between the battery (front) and firewall. So the fluid is literally defying gravity.

In this image you can see the end of the jacket where the red, black and white wire exit. The fluid is coming out of the wire jacket, gravity pulls it down to about where the red arrow is, and it drops off the wire where you can see the transmission fluid pooling.

This picture shows the wires, they travel down to the wheel well then join the huge bundle of wires which travel down and behind the firewall.

This pic shows the location of the wire within the engine bay. The wire is in between the two red dots.

This has got to be the strangest thing I've ever seen.

I unplugged the connector and set it in a catch can inside the engine bay to catch the fluid coming out. So far so good. If nothing else I'll just dump the fluid back into the transmission every few days until I can fix this.

I'm not sure what that wiring harness is responsible for, but the truck functions just fine with it unplugged. Reverse lights, speedometer both work and no CEL light so its probably not critical.

Anyone have the faintest idea what would cause the transmission fluid to travel up the wire like this?

Sounds and looks like it might be transmission or p/s cooler line The reason it is traveling uphill is because when u are driving the air flowing thru the engine bay and underneath is pushing the liquid into allsort of places Judging by picture that shows the area in front by the radiator being wet and you said the battery it definetly is leaking in the front vicinity and being spread backward The fluid would not be able to go foward in the engine bay

Some transmissions have a wiring harness that penetrates the transmission. It usually is to control the lockup solenoids. If you disconnect and check engine light comes on and code check indicates LockUp Solenoid issues. I saw this arrangment on a Toyota Avalon, not a Nissan.

good luck
