STP

Just for clarification, STP originally stood for "Scientifically Treated Petroleum". Studebaker did buy the formulation and used the Studebaker name in place of the "S" for a while.

As far as I can tell, the STP family of "thick" products is based on 3-11% solution of a branched poly(propylene-alt-ethylene). This polymer is also known as Benzene, diethenyl-, polymer with 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene, hydrogenated (CAS# 127883-08-3).

STP also contains ZDDP (1-3%) and Calcium alkaryl sulfonate (1-3%). The remainder (~90%) is napthenic and paraffinic distillates. Without the petroleum distillates, the product would not be pourable. It takes a lot of solvent to make a plastic flow from a can or bottle.

The only time I've used STP was in my old, very tired Plymouth flathead six. The intent was to cut down on oil burning.

That said, I wonder how much it raises the ZDDP levels of a SM/SN oil? Anyone have any insight?

How about a good racing mono SAE60 grade, like Valvoline VR1 SAE60 or Pennzoil GT SAE60? Thick and tons of zddp, plus they`re CHEAP!

I just sent a sample off for oil analysis of the Biglots STP 4cly treatment today. I figured it's time for a up to day VOA on this stuff, I added some to my 2000 Daytona 500 Grand Prix GTP on top of Q 4X4 AND SUV semi synthetic 10W30 and I am seeing a solid 2mpg gain in fuel economy and the car is running much smoother and I beat this thing up pretty hard. Added to our Altima as well on the same oil, don't drive the car so don't know the fuel economy change but will check. Wife says it seems smoother.

From some digging around on the net it's supposed to add about 380ppm zinc to 5qts of oil. But the current VOA's I found vary by as much as almost 1800ppm on the zinc.

So we will see what happens hopefully by next Friday.

Here is the bottle from Biglots.

Not to be confused with this bottle which probably has less or little zinc in it.

1 bottle STP Smoke Treatment (took 8 bucks) spilled into approx. 4 quarts quite good priced Total Quartz 9000 5W40 synthetic oil (group III) to make it thicker. It's condition like the honey.

Reason: high mileaged car intends to burn remarkable amount of oil, now 500 ml per 500 km (0.5 quart per 312 miles*); reason is the worn out piston rings and/or turbo gaskets. The last owner this SAAB applied 5W50 oil, and it was burning as well.

My air-cooled old bug (37 years) got always GTX High Mileage 15W40 and no oil consumption issue at 95°F Summer. SAAB sludge prone turbo car against mineral oils, but higher viscosity fully synthetic oils are quite expensive here, so 5W40 + 'honey' looks a good alternative for me.

(The turbo to be refurbished soon, it takes USD 265 - if no help, head to be removed for piston rings and valve stem replacement. So worth to try STP first.)

Any thoughts are much appreciated!

* Probably reason: STP Engine Flush at last oil change + 40% E85 in the gas tank for last 5 fuelings (combuston chamber deposits are getting to be removed, so cleaner engine but less tight rings). Gas prices are here getting to be unbelievable, E85 is cheaper by 21%.

I hate to admit it.. but I have a whole bunch of Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment (and a few maxlife oil treatment) bottles I got for 1 penny at an AZ clearance.
I also have to admit.. I can't see throwing it away either.
I use it in conjunction with my 5w30 Synpower (only in spring/summer). OR when I get bored of looking at a bottle, I'll toss one into someone's car. it's not lucas (and never will be) at least!

I used to run that red-bottle STP in my cars 10+ years ago, when it was sold up here. It's a LOT thinner than the regular blue-bottle STP.

It went away b/c it just never sold, while the blue-bottle stuff STILL sells by the boatlaod, ever today. Lots of folks convinced it is a real fix-it - my BIL just added it the other day to his Blazer 4.3 V-6.

I don't use mine as a fix but to boost up SM rated oil, for me I want 1000ppm minum on my oil. I got the Q 4X4 SUV semi synthetic for a buck each on base when they were closing it out.

Just found out you can no longer check Napa test online, they switched companies and they have to email or mail you your results. It use to be Stavely Services now some place called Tribology.

I have 22 bottles of the blue stuff I got from a garage sale. I add a bit to my old craftsman riding mower, push mower, the neighbours mower.
When I changed his oil on his push mower he had a puff of black smoke at start up,plugs was fouled with oily residue. I put maybe 1/8 of a bottle of the blue stuff in and the smoking stopped.
I rank the blue stuff right up there with Lucas oil stabilizer but I paid 2 bucks for 22 bottles so I figured whatever.
I have never seen the red stuff though. Is the blue the same but thicker, what I mean us are the additive content the same?

The Bottle of STP has less ZDDP additives and a much higher viscosity, You can tell the difference if you pour them side by side. The RED 4cly treatment did stop the rear valve cover gasket leak I had on my Grand prix Daytona, I no longer smell burnt oil on my manifold. (common GM 3800 series engine problem)

To me at $2.50 a bottle that adds just under 400ppm of Zinc to 5qt of oil according to the VOA done by Blackstone years ago, is a good deal.

I'm still waiting to see what the VOA I sent in comes back as, just to be sure it's the same formulation.
