big scary looking dogs? well, you're on your own then. they don't have a death wish.

Not that it's really anybody's business, especially on an oil site, but I practice religion (oh dear, will my post be banned and will I get a time out?), I just don't practice THEIR religion. I went to a parochial school, my kids went to a parochial school, I've been on our church board, I've been a baptismal sponsor and I've taught Sunday school. Currently, I'm a regular church attendee. Once again, if I wanted THEIR religion, I would have asked for their religion.
While I don't push religion on this site, it was only mentioned because of the situation.

I was just commenting on why they may keep coming back. they don't know who lives there or your particular situation.

I an a plumbing contractor. It seems that whenever I hire an employee based on what he tells me his experience and expertise is, I lose. I'm a very small employer - the most employees I have ever had is 7, and right now I have 1. There are a lot of people who can almost do the job, a lot who can sort of do the job, and some who are completely helpless. For instance, I recently had a job running gas piping to 13 new rooftop units at a large retail store. I had a new hire who told me that he had 20 years experience in both residential and commercial plumbing. The first task I gave him involved screwing in some 3/4" pipe nipples. After a couple of hours, I went to check on him and found that he hadn't done anything. When asked why, he told me, "Well, the machines is 3/4", and you give me them 1" nipples." He hadn't actually tried to do anything, just assumed I gave him the wrong parts. I had to get rid of him quickly, because not only will he do everything he can to destroy my business (thinking he's "helping"), but he'll also fall off a building, drill a hole in himself, or get electrocuted.

At the same time, I deal with suppliers who sometimes have incompetent counter or inside sales help. At one wholesaler, whenever I talk to the sales department, I ask the receptionist, "Could I speak to sales, anybody except Mike ___?" Because whatever question I ask Mike, he either tells me they don't carry it, it's out of stock, or they don't make it any more. Most of the counter guys there are pretty good, and have a lot of part numbers memorized, but if I need something unusual, I generally go in armed with a part number.

I consider my local Home Depots to be convenience stores. They often have the most common articles I need at a reasonable or semi-reasonable price. I occasionally run into a semi-competent person there, but for the most part, I know what I came for. Mostly I only ask for help if something's not on the shelf. Then they can shut down half the store while they get the fork lift from the back 40 and slowly bring down the item (slight rant).

OTOH, when you find good help in a store, thank them, and if you can, mention to a supervisor/manager that the person was friendly and helpful. If I run into a jerk, I don't mind complaining. I should also do what I can to help the competent people. It helps them, it helps me, and it helps the world at large.

The people working at the $10 haircut chains are amateurs and first timers getting a foot in the door. Follow the money to find the experienced barbers. The salons.

True. A qualified hair professional is hard to find. I hope this doesn't come off as stereotyping, but I've had good luck with Asian hair stylists over the years. Maybe because most Asians have hair that's difficult to cut evenly, so the Asian hair stylists had to learn how to deal with it.

I've had my hair cut at the same place for over 4 years now, even though I now live 30 miles away and it costs twice what I'd pay at a typical chain establishment.

I am convinced that "service writers" at most stealerships are there because they botched too many repairs back when they were out in the shop.

I look 'em right in the eye and tell 'em "The BISHOP says I can't talk to you". Since most of them are selling aome religious cult or another wo which blind obediance is required, they don't know what to say after that.

Correct.
Their function is to generate income with their tongues and pens.

'Sad part is that this puts brick and mortar stores out of business and occasionally when you need something right away, or want to see an item (in the flesh) before you purchase it going to be nearly impossible.

Amazon.com is part of the problem of folks wanting the cheapest price at ANY cost.

I'm sure you're the only person they've ever run into who thinks they have a snappy comeback

Here it is $18 for a hair cut at a regular salon/barber.

I got my hair cut yesterday for $5 by a student in the cosmetology class at school (college). I just wanted my head shaved.

service writers at the stealerships are the best... I love their lies and excuses why the warranty does not cover the problem... lol its good because when you take them to court on lemon law you get a brand new car for free! Even the judges think they are silly
