Stashing Oil a Thing of the Past?

I have chosen to not stash any oil at all anymore. I also don't like that stashed oil sits for so long in my garage, which sees temps. between -20 degrees and 110 degrees F.

Do you still stash oil, or it also a thing of the past for you? Why?

I still have 100+ qts of PP from the AAP BoGo. Just makes economic sense to stash. Pennzoil says it will last 60 months if kept inside. Figure the savings of the sale and then the reduced travel to the AAP store cost and to me it's well worth it.

That is just smart shopping! I also have 3 cars a motorcycle and a twin engine boat to take care of. If I took all to the dealer it would cost about $600 for 1 oil service.

I used to have a huge stash of GC (about 80L) back when it first came out, as I was always afraid it would be discontinued. I'm now down to my last few bottles of it, I've got enough for one more oil change in my mom's car.

For my two cars I don't really keep a huge supply on hand. I did buy three jugs of PP 5w30 last year because Walmart had them for $18.47 each (about half the normal price here) but I've only got one left now.

My plan is to basically just buy enough oil for one future oil change in my cars. I do them about once every six months, so after I use up any oil, I've got six months to find a good sale on my next oil change.

I service two cars. I thought it would be a good idea to buy the shell oil for 99 cents a quart after rebate. The rebate never came in the mail.

Now I'm back to buying 5 quart jugs of mobil5000 for 8.99 at walmart for all our cars.

I probably use about 20 quarts of oil per year.

I figure I've got about 5 years worth of CI4+ diesel oil...bought it when the uncertainly of CJ4 was abound.

btw- I generally would not return oil I got on discount for profit, but I have SO FREAKING MUCH of the Delo 30 that the Rotella 30 really does me no good.

My plan=

Mobil 1 0w30 for 3-4 changes.
SynPower for 3 changes.
Then I have a ton of PP, like 7 cases to use up.

My woman's car will get similar treatment, but with PZ SUV/Blend and then Formula Shell.

2 years of oil stash is fine, not too crazy.

Stashers have to remember to look at the date codes, use the oldest bottles first or you really will find yourself with out-dated stuff. Anything older than '05 is getting ready to be used already.

I got oil older than 5 years, I'm gonna use it anyway. most of my oil was bought 2-3 years ago. I got enough oil for 5.5 years. so by the time I get to the end, some of the oil will be 7-8 years old. oh well.

I'm sure oil lasts longer than 5 years, its the API rating that changes making the oil out dated, but chemically its still fine.

Oh yeah, between late 05 and early 07 I stashed back almost 300 qts. I'm down to about 250 qts and couldn't be happier. Heck, my cars spec SJ and SH so I'm not worried at all.

Well, I myself don't hop in the car just to go out looking for oil deals, that a waste of fuel reguardless of $per/gal. I do however while running errands, if Im in the neighborhood of my favorite autoparts store, occasionaly stop in and look at the discount shelves. Or if Im shopping with my wife at a shopping plaza and there happens to be an auto parts store in a location nearby, I'll take a walk over there to see what on sale.

Shure, older oil works ok, but it is out-dated by newer products. Like the issue I have with my SL Mobil 1 0w-30, it's great oil, but at 5 years old I want to use it. A few years from now, it would be a tougher call betwen the old stuff and brand-new PP or even an exotic import.

I get bored with the same old kind of oil after 3-4 changes of it and am ready to move on. I'm just finishing up a bunch of Havoline Semi-Synth, some of it 2003 vintage, but I'm bored with it even though it a great oil.

Kinda the same thing with tires for me, I like to try newer models and maybe suggest the older good ones I've used for friends and family.
