Castrol now sells an oil called 'Startup' that has synthetic additives to help with startup wear. I assume it contains esters that cling to the metal. Are there any aftermarket additives that could be added to a dino to give the same protection or is it really that important?

IIRC the "Startup" line didn't sell well and I believe it may be phased out. A few outlets have been putting that oil on clearance recently.

Sorry, can't answer the rest of your question.

IMHO a good quality full synthetic motor has the same polar properties of motor oil film clinging on the cylinder wall during startup.

Thanks! Yeah, I know the synthetics will do it, but I was just curious if there was an additive that would give that benifit to dino. In theory, it seems like a good idea.

TallPaul, that's not a bad idea, but I don't know if Redline's ester's are di-esters, the polarized type that clings to metal. Anyone know?

Castrol's new oil now is some kind of a anti-sludge thing and they want about $2.50 for it. I guess next we will see them with cheesy stuff like 4X4 oil, SUV oil, sports car oil and the like.

Someone mentioned "synthetics" as sticking to metal. That is very true of the group V esters, but the group IV PAO's won't stick to anything. Not sure about the group III.

Redline is no doubt a blend of a number of different esters, some more polar than others. No doubt they throw in some PAO to shrink the seals that the esters tend to swell. (I will contact them and ask what their PAO content is......if any.)

I have run straight Redline for years in my trucks, and Maxima Extra (also an Ester based synthetic) in my 20 or so dirt bikes and ATVs.

The important thing on "startup", is that you want an oil that is very pumpable and will build up pressure rapidly, especially to plain bearings.

^^ Castrol GTX (anti-sludge) is on sale $1.77 at AAP. I picked up 9 qts of 5w20 for my first few changes in my new Neon. Whay can't anyone make an oil specific for a "Daily Drive to Work Vehicle"?

I always wanted to try the special "SUV formula" when I had my Explorer...

Redline claims (according to an ad in European Car) to not use ANY PAO's in their oils. Esters, by nature, are supposed to be polar, from what I've read.

I've wondered, the same thing, BTW, if using a little of the Start-up would be beneficial.

Do the Amsoil 100% synthetic oils (HDD,TSO,ATM,ASL,..) have group V esters--cling to metal for startup protection? I'm wondering if Amsoil HDD might be the best 5w30 oil for least engine wear with mostly cold start, less than 10 mile trip driving.

MOC premium engine treatment: "This premium formula fortifies standard motor oil to provide superior engine protection. Contains detergents that prevent oxidation and thickening of oil. Helps neutralize acids and prevent sludge formation. treats metal surfaces with an amazing antifriction package that reduces wear."

I assume "treat" means bonds to metal and that would provide startup protection. I don't know how well this product works. A local Toyota dealer routinely uses it at OCI on vehicles under warranty. I plan to get UOA with & without to compare.
