Star Spangled Banner

What they should do is have a contest a month before next years super bowl and have America vote on which young amateur singer gets to sing the anthem! Look on Youtube; there's plenty of young 15 year olds with unimaginable talent who don't butcher it.

Christina Aguleria is not a very naturally talented singer. On pure vocal ability alone, she's no where near some of the people who've shown up on American Idol.

She never charged a dime for doing so because she was "proud" to do it, and she performed it the way it was written. And in the 29 years I've been married to her, she never missed a note or a word.

My house is not made of glass, it is made out of wood and has a family of proud Americans living in it.

Charley Pride sang the National Anthem at the World Series in Arlington.
It wasn't his usual perfect baritone voice, it was a little rough, but he didn't forget the words and didn't add a bunch of vocal inflections into it to change it up. Plus he is well into his 70s and a Country Music Legend.

I respect Charley Pride's rendition. I do not respect Christina Aguilera's.

And I don't even listen to Country music...well not today's country/pop anyway.

But then again, Dallas Stars fans shout, "STARS!" twice during the National Anthem. Anaheim won't even perform the National Anthem when they play against The Stars because of it. The crowd remains on their feet and facing the Canadian flag when "Oh Canada" is performed. They are not too terribly disrespectful. But, "STARS" will be shouted out. So maybe it's us....

I don't know why there is so much hysteria over singing the National Anthem. It's an outmoded and lousey tune, and needs to be replaced. But I'm not a flag waver, and and don't worry about outmoded patriotic songs.

I'm sure they will welcome you with open arms in Pakistan or Egypt

If you'd think about the amount of blood that was shed for your ability to make that comment, perhaps you'd have more respect for your country and the anthem.

I will admit that the Star Spangled Banner is not the easiest song to sing. But a man or a woman with a good singing voice and able to remember the words to the song should have no problem singing the song. I don't believe that our national anthem should be replaced every once in a while by whatever kind of singing happens to be 'in' at the time.

An amazing number of people today in the USA have no knowledge of history and no understanding whatsoever the price that has to paid by many to preserve freedom in this country. Hundreds of thousands of Americans died and were severely injured in Worl War II alone so that this country could continue to be free. But many young people today have no idea whatsoever what happened in that war.

Few today even have knowledge of when and how and under what conditions the Star Spangled Banner was written. If these yound people did know and were not so totally concerned with themselves they might better be able to appreciate the Star Spangled Banner.

Care to offer a replacement?

I don't know that much about CA and her usual singing style, but I did see a video of her singing the anthem at age 11 and she sung it normal. If it weren't for her messing up a few words, and I could almost overlook that, I'm not sure if she's the one to blame. The people who set up the anthem performance wanted and knew it was going to be sung hip hop style, or they sure should've known how it would be performed. I see this a lot at major sporting envents where the anthem is sung hip hop style usually by a hip hop person. No one complained until CA did it...they should've been complain before.
