So for the last 10 or so oil changes i've been using Penzoil Platinum 5w30. After seeing a few UOAs on the 2.5l turbo charged STi engine with high wear numbers from Mobil and another from PP im thinking about changing over to SSO or Redline.

Living in PA the temperatures are falling and im trying to decide on what oil to use.

Any thoughts?

For what it means Delo 400 ,Delvac 1300,and all HDEOs are tailor made for turbos since most diesel engines have turbos!!!

Yep, so is M1 Turbo Diesel Truck

My biggest worry is the SSO is too thin a weight for my vehicle, and it might sheer even lower.

Gary what do you think?

WE have a winner!!! that oil should hold up if any oil will.

The SSO has a marginally lower 100C visc ..but is a tick down on the HTHS compared to RL. NOACK is better on RL too. Both are better than PP.

If I were going head to head with RL 5w30 ..I think HDD would be my choice. There the finer details are closer to each other. If your needs are leaning to "0w" ..then M1 0w-40 might be my reluctant suggestion.

Not that I doubt SSO's ability to serve you in this capacity. It's just that there are specifics that you're looking for that may be better served with another oil.

Then as I expected a healthy diet of Redline 5w30 after two or three OCIs I'll have a UOA preformed.

I know the first 2-3 redline uoas can be wacky.

They tend to settle down if you hang long enough. RL is great stuff, but the only thing that appears to be able to run it out to warrant its price is a Honda ..and those engines can typically do it on $3 dino

So then I need to think about viscosity, for winter should I go 5w30? 40?

I run the car hard sometimes but its mostly highway driving, and no track over winter.

With Redline, you can often go one grade lower because the shear stability is so high.

I'd probably go with the 5w30. I'd really suggest doing your own UOA. While engine families tend to run somewhat alike ..drivers do not.

I'll have a UOA on SSO under some nasty conditions in about a week or so. Stock engine with a new OEM turbo, 100F+ temps, towing, off-roading, 5 mile daily trips, and lots of shifts at or near redline.

I ran it longer than I expected to (8k) and I'm sure the oil was spent. There's a modified Forester turbo on another forum running the HDD that Gary mentioned. It cut his oil consumption but he doesn't have a uoa.

I might go more robust next summer. I was just trying to save 1-2 mpg's.

I am so interested in the 0W40 it isn't funny (do Americans understand that?). If it has a HTHS 3.5 or a tad over I may have found the oil I need for my BMW. Sure looking forward to those spec sheets

Where in PA do you live?

If in the southern end, a 10w30 is enough in winter. RL 10w30 has good cold flow characteristics.

If up towards NY, then a 5w30 might be better.

You don't need a 40 weight RL in that engine in a street app unless you're tracking it very hard on the side.

Remember, go too heavy and spool up suffers. That takes all the fun out of the turbo.

Before shelling out the premium dollars for RL, have you tried GC? A little cheaper and nearly as good, all things considered.
