Splitting lanes on the freeway

In Cali it’s legal if you aren’t exceeding the speed limit and you aren’t going over 10 mph faster than traffic. he obviously wasn’t following the law, and paid dearly.

Do you have a reference for this, Shaman? It's not that I don't believe you; it's just that it sounds like if traffic were stopped, a MC would only be permitted to go 10MPH, which doesn't sound very practical (or safe?).

Some bad news. Our lane splitter did not make it. A cardiac arrhythmia that could not be reversed ended it for him earlier today. They won't have a complete story until he gets posted. I hear from one of the Doctors that he had a wife and a 2 year old boy. Really sad that he pulled such a stupid stunt, and it was probably not the first time, he just got caught out this time. I think when you have a family it's time to slow down and live. I feel bad in that all I could do for him was to help put it off for a couple of days. What a shame, spring has just arrived and he's going to miss it all.

Lonnie,
that's sad.

Was almost about to get a bike 2 or 3 years ago, when a guy I pulled over to let past me crashed three corners later. He was fortunate enough to "only" develop an extra level of articulation between the shoulder and elbow of his right arm.

Thoughts of that, and my kids, I quickly decided against bikes.

On my 2 hour drive home from work I always see Highway Patrol motorcycles splitting lanes between the carpool lane and fast lane. They usually have a big group of motorcycles behind them, following. So it has to be legal. (Just read Steve128's links - yep it is.

Whenever I see a motorcycle on the right hand side of the carpool lane - I either move over so I'm hitting the road bumps (usually lets the guy know to go around me) or if there is enough room get my 2 right tires over the median (next to center divider for freeway).

I have witnessed a motorcycle driver get hit by lane splitting (it wasn't his fault - big minivan hopped into the carpool lane illegally right when motorcycle was there). Ruined 4 tires trying to keep from running over the guy. Pretty crazy seeing a grown man cry and not know who he is or what his name is after that experience.

Lonnie has a real sad story - specially because that dude had a family.

When the bike passed me I was slowing down from about 75 coasting because there was traffic ahead. The bike was going at least 95 and the car he hit was going about 50mph, switching lanes.

Doing 95 on the freeway when everyone else is doing 75 is dangerous regardless of lane splitting. I personally feel lane splitting was not the problem. It's what was between the riders ears was the problem.

Darwinism at work.

Generally lane splitting is down at lower speeds when traffic is crawling along. Say 20-30 mph. The cyclist would then split no more than 5 or so over. I feel its safer between the cars than the "stop and go" of a congested highway, where some inattentive person on the cell phone "crunches" me in the car in front. No thanks. I'll take lane splitting any day. As long as it's done safely and within reason.
Splitting at 95 when everyone is 75 is just dumb.
