Oh no... Ok so I changed the oil with the QS 5w30 UD as per the oil light thread in PCMO.... Well, now something is wrong. First thing that worried me was the color of the oil. never seen anything like it, it was almost auburn, reddish. The oil plug had a very worrying amount of ferrous material for only 1,000 miles... Then, I fill it up, and I hear this....

I'm panicking right now. When the camera is under the hood, it is louder than that, it cuts out alot of it from the fan noise. But it's lower pitched, and louder. It doesn't do it as much with the A/C off, but it still does it... I'm praying it's a loose rocker arm. You can FEEL it. It produces a very noticeable vibration. I don't know.. What is wrong with my car? It doesn't do it at all at higher rpms, it runs just fine. I'm worried that the hydro locking when we reassembled the engine from that EGR gasket did something, and something is damaged. I don't know, all I know is that something is bad...

I hear it, but really can't place whats going on with that sound. Almost sounds like a rattle/clacking to me.

Sounds like timing chain tensioner to me. Not a rocker arm.

Could even be the oil pump...

Nice looking car, and you too!

Could be something as simple as loose heat shielding, but you should really get a length of tubing and a long screwdriver to narrow down exactly where the noise is coming from. Without better diagnosis any 'sounds like...' is only a guess, and possibly not a particularly good one at that.

And stop with the Cloverfield-esque shakycam, jeez.

Was a regular point and shoot, not a camcorder lol. I've pretty much narrowed it down to the #1 cylinder area, it emnates from that area.

Yeah Stevie I dunno. Gonna have my dad take a look at it. I doubt it's the timing chain, because it doesn't do it as much with the A/C off. Again, under the hood, it is MUCH louder and deeper in pitch than the camera records it as. It's not good.

Tried the ol' hold the screw driver to the area and next to your ear trick to get a better idea? use it like a stethoscope.

What I heard sounded kind of like a powertrain mount or exhaust rattle (not sure why it would suddenly go out) or even a timing chain. It didn't sound like an engine knock. It's real hard to tell from the video. What does it sound like with the A/C off while driving?

It's difficult to hear what your hearing, but in regards to your other issue I thought it would be nice to mention this (I thought perhaps it would help)I have a co-worker that owns the same car, same year. His has about 10k more miles than you and it is in very nice shape like yours. He always uses Mobil 1 5w30 and a mobil 1 filter, about 3 months a go his started doing the same thing (oil light flickering at idle). We ordered a new set of rod bearings and he changed them out one Saturday afternoon. I didn't help him, but he commented it was pretty easy to do on that engine. The end result was problem solved and it only cost a few dollars and a few hours to accomplish.

PS: Also none had spun yet, but they were on there way.. (thin)

I kept the old oil filter, as per what everyone suggested. I figure that means I just won't run tihs for longer than 7,000 miles, or change it out no later than early november so I don't have to do it mid winter. The belt tensioner is brand new, and I suppose it COULD be the problem, but I don't see how. With the A/C off, it still does it, but much much quieter, and not as much. Timing chain would be a real pain in the tuchus because of it's location. We would have to pull the whole engine to get at it, I think. And I hope that it isn't rod bearings, but I suppose that could cause the oil light. We'll see what happens. I just drove it 30 miles, and it still does it at idle, but it drives just fine, quiet and smooth, so I don't know. I'll mention it to dad tonight and maybe he'll have an idea or two.

Nick, It sounds to me like a loose accessory (PS pump, A/C compressor, etc.) mounting to the engine. Internal noise inside the engine are much more muted. The only other thing I can think of would be the front pulley or the A/C pulley. FWIW-- Oldtommy

does this particular motor have a balance shaft assembly? I recently read something on a different forum where it almost had the same noise. It turned out to be the balance shaft chain guide had broke into pieces and was laying in the bottom of the oil pan. without the guide, the chain was flopping around and hitting the insides of the block. That could be the cause of the extra metals you saw.

Remove the serpentine belt and run it to see if the noise goes away. You can safely run that engine without the serpentine belt installed for long enough to determine if the noise went away.
