i changed the fluid about 4 months ago, 2,000 miles or less.

RED Permatex RTV
Exxon Superflow 85w-140 Dino

vehicle is usually drive only 2 times, 3/4 mi each time a 5 days a week then parked. it was parked 3 days before the fluid was changed, it was damp outside

the vehicle was not driven right before the cover was taken off

ok it looks like there is some sort of rust or something in the upper part of the cover? should i be worried? could also be the skin of the RTV. i usually only let it setup 30 minutes before putting the diff back together, never been a problem

That's rust. When the car is parked, the oil settles, and isn't sloshed around, as when running. You can see where the oil level is, by the sudden line of rust appearing. Moisture will do this - it's not uncommon.
Not getting the oil hot enough to vaporize the water, and extended periods of sitting, will do this.
Water is in the air, or may have been ingested through the vent hole.
I hope it's not on the gears.
Either clean it completely, or leave it alone

thanks, that's what i figured

the vent tube end is 4' off the ground

i do have a slightly leaking pinion seal, which im going to replace soon

fluid looked ok, no milky fluid

i was putting on a thicker differential cover, so i just cleaned out the axle and put it back together with new lube

Don't you think that is part of the problem? Nothing ever gets hot...engine oil...transmission fluid ..diff fluid ...moisture collects ..things rust and wearout ..take it for a spin man

after a month or so, i guess under 2,000 miles

i stuck a magnet in the catch container and i wiped a bunch of black metallic material from them, here is the residue

The blackness came from the old black oil/residue that was in the axle tubes and outboard bearings, then mixed with the new stuff.
Just keep flushing it till you're happy.
No worries!

Mechtech is right.

Just metal paste; be glad it's suspendable.
