So... What is your guess for this winter?

So last winter was supposed to be bad for the northeast.... But up here we got very little snow overall. This summer has been a complete opposite of last year. Last year it was rainy and cold, this year it's been clear and hot. We are at a 7" rainfall deficit for the year. So this winter, what are you going to predict? Is it going to be "dry" (ie no snow) or is going to be a record dumper? I'm going to guess (nay, hope) for a lot of snow this winter. Good skiing with my season pass for gore!

Im thinking a lot of snow this winter, then that will temper the summer, so then it will get more mild for a few years, and then go back. Just an oscillation.

Up here--long, cold and lots of snow. Fireweed is already gone to seed.
Normally we have snow on the ground by Halloween, I won't be surprised if it comes in mid-October this year.

Waiting for a real winter like 77/78

Oh man, that was a brutal one. The past 15-20 years our area has been invaded by people fleeing California. They always say "These winters aren't too bad. I thought they'd be much worse". I just smile and think to myself - "yeah wait until another winter like 77-78 hits!"

We've been trying to guess what the winter will be like here in northern Michigan this year. Some of the older locals say lots of snow this year after the long, hot summer. If I have my choice, I'll take the "more snow than usual" over the "colder than usual"...but I don't so I guess we'll deal with whatever happens (just getting harder as my joints age).

two winters back I had a drift up to my porch roof, so one morning my cat was looking at me through my 2nd story bedroom window.

That snow stuck around until May 3.

The ideal winter starts with a modest snowfall, to insulate the ground, then just stays cold and dry.

Fall is a great time to shake project cars loose. Portland has snow parking bans and if one is cunning they can buy barely-running beaters hours before they'd otherwise get towed on the first major snowfall.

If you like cold, then I hate to say it but you are in the wrong place, lol Better move up here, it's already into the 40s, 50s at night and consistently during the day about 60-70

We had record rainfalls all spring and summer this year, along with cooler temperatures. If that trend continues into the winter it could mean lots of snow and cold for us...but then who knows it could be dry and warm....

we keep seeing knives in the persimmon seeds. last year it was spoon which means a good snow or snows. it was accurate last year for us. the knife means sharp cold winter.. i do not put too much stock in the seeds but who knows

That is what I heard too.
After El Nino this summer, it is the turn of El Nina this winter, so colder than usual (could be by quite a good margin), with a little bit less snow (more continental type of weather (think MI) than oceanic (usually NY)).

We should check what happened last time of El Nina. I just hope this is not like the winter when we got -30C for two long weeks in a row, everything got so cold (usually it is only 3-4 days in a row).

38F at 7 AM this morning, grass was covered with frost.
Gets up to 50 during the day.

I saw a lot more Outside license plates this summer around town (our economy is doing better than the rest of the states), it will be interesting to see how many cheechackoes will stay after the first winter. Last good snowfall comes in May, usually.

I've been in south FL since 1973 and you guys up North are sooo lucky to actually have 4 seasons and cold weather for the holidays. Down here there is no such thing as winter.

I can wait and see. Cold and snow arent the problem. I'm starting to dread the oncoming darkness. Boston has 12 hrs of daylight now. In 3 months, this goes down to 9 hrs, 5 minutes.
