So I've gone 190K on the 3,000 OCI

Like someone mentioned , they use it fast enough to not worry about that, especially the conventional/synblend flavors. They have a vacuum air pump which stirs things everytime they use it.

As far as knowing whats in a barrel , you can either park outside a shop you wanna use and watch the deliveries, that way you are sure the product is being delivered/used , you could request them to show you the drum ( if they care enough to have you as a customer they will take you ) or trust them if they have been a longtime established location.

In my experience, they have a lot more to lose than gain by not using the oil you selected.

Long stable history + huge customer base are usual indications towards a shop doing good work.

+1...200k is not the time to start extending OCI's.
WRONG!!! By this logic, you should cut the oci's down to, say, 300 miles.

Even at 200k, the 3000 mile oci is insane.

At 200,000 miles [sometimes sooner] I go with a cheaper oil and extended the OCI. In my case I get tired of the vehicle, it's beat and falling apart [thanks NY roads] and I'm getting ready to get rid of it. At some point in the life of a vehicle it becomes a beater. lol Different strokes for different folks.

In our shop, as in most I would suppose, the bulk oil is stored inside at stable temps. We go through oil quite quickly. We just added a 5w30 bulk tank. We use Motorcraft, which I now understand is 60% synthetic. I plan on using in in my van that just turned 146k miles (purchased it new btw). I would use it in my pickup, but it is not available cheaply in 0w30. My pickup will get an 0w30 full synthetic for once-a-year oil changes, about 5k miles or less. Will use QSUD if I can find it in Ow/30. If not I will use Pennz Plat. The majority of my oil changeson my van, at least since the 30k mark, have been 5k-6k oci's with full synthetic.

You took a big swing, whiffed, tripped and fell down. The logic was leave it alone.

Mine starts right up too, and runs nicely, but there comes a time.........Quite frankly if it doesn't start in the dead of the winter it will be something other than the oil that caused the problem, at least in my neck of the woods.

You are averaging 19K per year and that's alot. It translates to mostly all highway driving - which is easy on engines and oil.

Switch to 5K OCIs. It won't hurt the engine driving so much highway.

My 2002 Camaro has 180K on it, and I followed the OLM for 160K of those miles. Then I started running Red Line oil and going past the OLM to ~9000 miles. At this stage in its life, the engine burns about 1/2 quart in 6000 miles. Since your engine is burning 1/2 quart in 1000 miles, I would say that your oil consumption is high.

I recommend that you switch to a high-mileage oil, such as Mobil 1 High Mileage and do an initial OCI of 4-5K to clean out the engine, then start following the OLM. Do not be surprised if the oil on the dipstick turns dark quickly, that just means it's cleaning out your engine. M1 HM did a good job for me, lowering the oil consumption by ~25% compared to the regular M1 I ran before.

We are getting off topic here...

You are replacing a quart every 2000 miles so if the OLM goes 10,000 miles you will have added 5 quarts.

GM designed the OLM assuming minimum oil usage so it will be conservative under the circumstances.

Go for it.

ALL oil is bulk before bottled. You do realise if quick lube shops kept their conventional oil in qt bottles, they would b wasting an insane amount of plastic which they would have to pay someone to recycle OR EPA will definitely have something to say about that. Thus raising our costs for oil changes. Bulk oil as long as its name brand is every bit as good as your so called bottled oil.
At least try to get the facts right before you go about advising someone on their life long investment.

Problems with bulk oil change places arise from human error or laziness. It's usually stuff like over/under tightening of ur drain plug, filter no tightened enough or over/under filling of the sump.
I believe by bulk mystery oil he may mean, Whatever is in those 2 or 3 hoses suspended from the ceiling. I feel the same about that. Lets see... 3 hoses, many oil weight classes; 10-40, 10-30, 15-40, 5-20, 5-30, 0-40, etc... Doesn't add up to me...
