For us uneducated types... I've been on this board for quite some time, and I think I have probobly seen every type of motor oil mentioned as someone's favorite, or at least mentioned positively at some time or another. Are there no poor quality motor oils?

I did see something called 'Wolf's Head' @ the convenience store, now I would think that would be **** oil...
At least I've learned to quit buying Fram from these forums.

Accel, heard it's not that great. Other than that, most oils should be pretty good.

Chevron 10w30 is a bad oil. It coked, varnished, and caused bore and/or ring damage with irreversible oil consumption in my 4.6L Ford. I'm not sure why the previous owners used this unspecified oil.

Use oils that have to pass the rigorous wear and life tests for currently produced autos or trucks. Buy the best oil you can afford, OCI considered of course. Cheap oils and "consumer grade" oils are no bargain.

uh oh !!

Why would you consider wolfs head a **** oil? I havent even seen a bottle of it in at least 10 years, but it was supposed to be good back in the day.

Wolf's Head is/was owned by Pennzoil, and has been since the 60's or so.

And the only oil I've really seen any sort of consensus on here about it's being "not good" is probably Coastal. And even then, around here "bad" means only being good for 3-4000 miles. Pretty much every other brand of oil seems to considered good for most applications, and better than almost anyone needs. Most of the discussion is simply about what is the absolute best (basically is oil A or oil B more overkill) and/or what oil is the best value for the money (hence the love for TropArtic and the hate for Valvoline All Climate). And oh yeah, what oils are "real" synthetic, and what ones are "fake."

I think the only thing that is "bad" in that quote is 4.6L Ford.............That's what caused all of your problems, not the Chevron!

No way! This engine runs like a dream come true. But it took 20K miles of synthetic to clean up the rings and bring the oil consumption down after the Chevron 10w30 garbage oil. Chevron can make the best conventional oil of all time, but this consumer grade Group I garbage oil wasn't it. Buy wisely!

Funny. A lot of people fawn over Chevron Supreme.

It was Chevron bulk 10w30. Also, it is probably the Chevron Supreme 5w30 that is made with the IsoSyn basestock that people rave about. The same goes for the Havoline. Long term use will tell the tale.

No offense to the 'Wolf's Head' folks!... I just figured it was some off brand... only saw it in one place that I can think of.

Most likely the previous owners used an unspecified OCI, multiple times.

I talked with the previous owners at length. This was an I-95 commuter car that was very well maintained. It looks, runs, and drives like new. All fluids were fresh when I bought it. When they hit 1qt/500miles oil consumption I think they decided to sell it. I have put 33K miles on it and it runs best ever.

To answer the original question, no, there are no bad oils that meet either SL/GF-3 or SM/GF-4. Oil is like beer, they're all good but some are better than others!

Wolf's Head was part of the Pennzoil/Quaker State Co. before Shell bought it and made it a SOPUS brand. I would think that it is at least as good as Shell's regular dino oil. I wouldn't hesitate to use WH in the proper grade for 3 or 4K OCI's.

PS: Back in the 70's Wolf's Head was good enough to spawn an imitator called 'Fox Head' oil. I probably wouldn't use Fox Head but I would (and have) used Wolf's Head especially when Sam's Club carried it at a good price a few years ago.

Rodbuckler: I doubt that 10w30 Chevron was the cause of your problems nor was the Ford 4.6. I would think that poor maintanence and/or dishonest people selling garbage bulk oil labeled as Chevron were at fault.

Ghetto fabulous, Let see if I got this straight.... Chevron "caused bore and/or ring damage with irreversible oil consumption". Now without ever taking the motor apart how do you know Chevron the damage bores and rings? How did those damaged bores and rings fix themselves? Do you even have a clue what you are talking about?

You had an lengthy conversation with the seller and he told you it was "VERY well maintained". You make the seller sound real honest. Sounds to me like he left the part out that it burned a qt of oil in 500 miles cause only a fool would knowingly buy a vehicle that burns a qt in 500 miles. You don't suppose the seller creditability was shot when he left the part out about it burns a qt in 500 miles do ya?

Sounds to me like your tripping over your own words playing anti Chevron keyboard commando wrench.
