During the Cuban missle crisis:
1. An air base in the US had a perimeter alarm go off, so airctaft with 'special weapons' were scrampled; it was a bear,
2. The US forgot to cancel some U2 polar flights which triggered a Soviet alarm,
3. The US forgot to cancel a satellite launch which also triggered a Soviet alarm.
We sometimes have the impression that nothing but cool professionals using fail safe systems are in charge, when in fact it's just a group of people.
I was an Air Force brat in Japan during the Cuban missle crisis, and remember being worried as I didn't know why my dad had 'army gear', why my mom was crying, and why there was so much traffic and so many armed MPs and soldiers everywhere. I remember the duck and cover drills in school, and the atmospheric tests of nuclear weapons. I sometimes still have to wipe a watery eye when I see images of the Berlin wall coming down.
