All were pushed into the corner with whatever treated gas that was in them, none had more than 1/4 tank... Each was filled with same gas I bought last fall...

The '87 on right lit off first pull on the rope... Of course I use the 90* tilt method(spark plug down for two sec) before cranking to be sure the primer well in the pulsa-jet carb is full...

The '83 Hondaized refused to light with three pulls on full choke, so off came air cleaner and was treated to a blast of starter fluid... With that it fired first time and was slinging grass 15-20 sec later... Three days later started first pull, always seems finicky on first start of season, with regular use starts first or second pull...

Grandpa Snapper with the 1980 Montgomery Ward Briggs started first pull, procedure same as the '87...

The 2004-ish Tecumseh lawn vac never starts without help(primer bulb is useless), so it gets a shot of ether before any cranking is done... Still took four or five pulls before I got it's attention, ran fine once it started... I don't feel it's worthy of a pict...

Well stop on by in a couple weeks and you can cut next time... I don't mind when it's cool, but dread the thought when it's 95* and dew point is 75*...

Can you honestly tell me your mower is any quieter standing near it on the opposite side of the exhaust???

The Honda does have a noticeable reduction in exhaust noise vs the old Briggs, but that's more due to size of muffler than anything else... It gets most of the usage these days but I still use the others on occasion, all the bagging duty is now handled by the '87(not the one in below pict)...

For what good it does there is a cap to force exhaust to side as well as a deflector... ..

Well that's good to know, guess this won't happen again...

Must have cheapened them in the '80s, this was a 1982 and the '81 engine that replaced it flipped out the rod a couple years later...

C'ept for the drive system, this one has mostly gone to the great recyclers in the sky... No doubt some part(s) from it is on each of the ones I'm still running... I know Grandpa Snapper has the solid state magneto, it repl the orig points unit...

Only parts original to the Honda powered unit are the front wheels(but not axle), deck and upper section of handle, everything else is from parts mowers... Originally that one wasn't self propelled, converted it with spare parts...

That must've made one heck of a bang!

Plum tree stump one, B&S zip... Wasn't even my stump, was being a good neighbor and doing some trimming next door... That one was a curb find & I had nothing in it, motor used oil but ran good... I'd scrapped the mower a year prior that donated the replacement engine, so was free as well... That engine was past well worn, used more oil(fill oil, check gas) than the one with busted crank... Orig thought it'd maybe last out the season, and I'd build a good one from the parts in storage, ran from '07 till '11 when it blew up...

I believe that second engine made as much, if not more noise when it kicked out the rod... Was running fine, rod cap split and it sounded like I'd ran over a set of tire chains... Locked up before I could get it shut off(had no dead man control)...
