My state just enacted a ban (long time coming) to ban smoking inside social venues.

Personally, I think it will make my family more likely to go to those places, as eating around cigarette smoke makes the food taste awful.

But there's some strange parts to the rules (including some "more equal" provisions.

Firstly, clubs can have a designated smoking area (usually outside, but I think they can install a positively ventilated place in stead)...they aren't allowed to direct people to where the designated spot is.

"Cigar" bars are not to allow smoking inside...why, when it's the express intention for people to enter those establishments for the purpose of smoking ?

"More equal"...the high roller's room at NSW casinos is still allowed as a smoking area. I'm sure that there will be some future lawsuits from staff in these areas eventually.

Personally, I'm happy with the extent of the law (with the above exceptions).

There's a group of people trying to stop smokers in their own homes, cars, outside in public etc...ought to get a life.

People in the UK may be asked by visitor's from government agencies (Inspector Morse, James Bond etc) to not smoke in their own homes during the visit. I guess the taxman doesn't want to get smoke blown up his... I bet passing gas in your own home will be regulated soon, too.

mori, there was one "test case" down here where a couple in a block of flats were booted out by the body corporate as their smoking was interfering with their upstairs neighbours.

They smoked heavily, windows open, and it wafted upstairs into their neighbour's "house"...ok dwelling.

Warned a few times, and took no action, they were booted, and it stood up in court...and I sort of agreed with it.

As to stopping people smoking in their homes...if it's your home, it's your right...if James Bond wants to come visit, that's his problem.

I hope they don't pass laws against passing gas (although Oz might well try...if it saves one..blah blah)...gas is huge merriment with a 4 and 2 year old in the house.

Yeah, I can smell it when my neighbor smokes. Common curtesy suggests to curtail activities (smoking, tap-dancing, orgies) that may affect housemates. Living in an apartment building isn't the same as living in your own four walls (where you should be allowed to fumigate yourself if you choose to do so).

I'm all for not having to breathe in tobacco smoke (and garlic fumes). California is at the forefront in having banned or banning smoking, including outdoors near office buildings, ATMs, in parks etc. Bars and restaurants have been smoke-free for years.

Now, how about garlic stench? I almost died on the train last week due to the presence of garlic odor. Garlic stench makes my eyes water.

When will we ban fatty foods?

When will we ban sugared soft drinks?

When will we ban alcohol?

When will we ever be smart enough to take care of ourselves without help from the almighty government?

Jaybird, banning smoking in restaurant, venues etc has to a lot to do with the health of the people who work there. The things you mention don't impact other people's health, smoking does.

(visions of Escape from LA)

Snake Plissken: Got a smoke?
Malloy: The United States is a non-smoking nation! No smoking, no drugs, no alcohol, no women - unless you're married - no foul language, no red meat!
Snake Plissken: Land of the free.

Banning smoking indoors allows more airtight construction, which saves energy... and retains b.o.

I visited a restaurant before the smoking ban here, and the air felt cleaner inside than on the street outside. They had smokers, but half a dozen air purifiers running.

I don't smoke. Can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke. LET THE INDIVIDUAL BUSINESS OWNER DECIDE WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE THIER OWN ESTABLISHMENT. WE CERTAINLY DON'T NEED THE GOVERNMENT TO DO IT! If your a waitress in a bar room with too much smoke, QUIT and get a new job or stop your whining!

I'm not leaving this country but somehow I get the feeling I'm living in the United States of France.

Do you have any info that second-hand smoke in a bar environment kills? From what I understand there's only been one study that has ever linked health issues to second-hand smoke, and that was a only a slightly increased risk only if you lived with a smoker.

well, let's see what mori thinks. Do people live shorter lives in urban areas where the static background pollution is equivalent to smoking of any amount? I'm sure that many of our most achieving supermen came from urban distressed areas where the rabble had smoking family members ..at least some of them (an unsubstantiated ..but sensible, assumption ..and, I imagine, other toxic things) yet they can run faster and jump higher then mere mortals. They don't even wear PF Flyers.

Not that I think anything that produces smoke is all that healthy to breath ..at least in too much of a quantity.

The fore-thinking population of this city voted in a smoking ban at establishments that serve food (big casinos exempt of course). So you can have food or smoking. Since drinks are more profitable to the local pubs, many (most?) are shutting down the food service areas going strictly as a bar. Can you say job loss?

Gary, how do you edit your post without the edited post being marked as edited? I know you just changed "if" to what." That's quite a stunt.

What I know is that all pollution adds up, and that I will avoid the one that can be avoided. I'm glad I didn't grow up around people who were smoking, that's for sure! Beyond this I have no intention on discussing this topic.

What surprises you so much? This topic has been discussed for so long and so extensively, I don't feel like chewing through all that cud again. Don't forget I grew up in a country where smoking was extremely popular. When we were in high school, we had 15 year olds with chronic bronchitis and many with asthma.

PS: The editing issue is much more interesting to me. How did you do that? Are you the forum's Grey Eminence, or what?
