my dad bought a 2005 jeep liberty 2.4 6 speed earlier this summer. it has 196,000 miles and was said to have been highly maintained. we suspected the transmission fluid might never have been changed since there was much rust and corrosion on and around the fill and drain plug for the german made ngs370. to my surprise when i cracked the 17mm hex drain plug, clean amber colored fluid came out. i use a bin to collect trans fluid so i was able to give it a whiff.
it smelled like nothing! there was a slight hint of it smelling like something between crisco, grease from animal fat and plastic. not at all a pungent smell characteristic of mtf synchromesh fluids.
the fluid spec is ms-9224. i used amsoil mtf to put back in it. but does anyone know what fluid might have come out of it? the jeep had a sticker from a quick lube, looked like uncle eds oil shoppe. i'm guessing thats where the trans must have been surviced. my guess its either bg or the mopar stuff but i have no idea how those smell. or maybe a bio lube??!?
