It is all Valvoline Synpower and had a production date of 2012. I tried to post pics but no success. I spoke with a manager and offered to buy all the old stock at a discount price,(24 quarts) but they were not having it.
I guess my question is, do you guys ever find such old oil for sale in stores?

Sometimes. I had luck with M1 0W40 from 2010 a few months ago...but the Barchetta didn't liked it so much! Was only 2 jugs of 5L though.

I was kinda suprised that they didnt want to liquidate the old stock. I was able to buy 14 quarts of the old PU in the dark grey bottles (pre pureplus) for $2 a quart at WM. I just had to point out the 2013 production date and they were happy to let me purchase all at a reduced price.

I'm still running 2008 SM VWB in my Focus and the girlfriends Jeep Liberty. It's out there but probably not much left

Really whats wrong with a "SM" oil??? My shop has hundreds of cases (not sold to public) of old (1989) mobil 0ne, (SG era) been using it for years in the shop fleet and my new cars with no ill effects, some of the vehicles now have 200k on them with NO problems.

Depends on the store. Around here, I haven't seen old oil in Meijer or Walmart, but, I have seen old oil in some of the auto stores. Our local Napa has some old Mobil 1 0W-30, for example, from the Tri-Synthetic era. Also found some Pennzoil Platinum with Pennzane additive. Some of the CARQUEST stores were the same way, older oil bottles mixed in the new ones.

It never hurts to try; if you save money all good, if they don't agree, it cost you nothing but a few moments of time. A sealed bottle of oil won't go "bad" in any reasonable length of time. If you are really worried about an oil not meeting API grade, mix in a quart / litre of the old with the new until your stock is used up.

Whatever you do, though, don't tell your dealer you are not using the correct (as per the Owners' Manual) API grade. No point in giving them the means to dis-allow a warranty claim.

Sears here has a whole shelf full of SJ rated Syntec 5W50 for the bargain price of $10 a quart. Complete with cobwebs and faded labels!

If it was tested, how much of that old oil would meet API SN standard ?

I suspect the old M1 and SynPower would probably pass SN easily. And if it doesn't, I would most likely guess due too elevated levels of Zinc & Phos (ZDDP) in the ILSAC grades. Which isn't a problem for one or two OCI, especially if your car doesn't burn oil. Infact some of us likes bit of extra ZDDP - if it's there, not saying the levels would be elevated.

Some of the Meijer locations around here have equally ancient quarts of Synpower.
Don't know why they don't clearance them but they haven't.
Maybe the same UPC as the later quarts?
Nobody buys oil by the quart these days anyway.
They may as well clearance all of the quart bottles.
Incidentally, API SM/SF is a spec, not a grade.

They must be following the Canadian school of motor oil product management. Up here, they almost never try to clear out an old product. They just let it linger until it finds its own way out. Occasionally, you'll see a clearance price of 10% off, which is a joke, because the current product next to it is like 40% off, because they play pricing games.

Nobody? Have you done the BITOG thing and looked at oil shelves lately?

Plenty of quart bottles of oil for sale still, far more than the gallon or 5 quart jugs. Many sumps are not even gallons or multiples of 5 quarts.
