My boss has a 2013 crew cab 1500. The prior version, not the latest and greatest. Was talking to him yesterday about bench seats etc when he mentioned that the center seats in his do not have 3 point seatbelts. ? I find that hard to believe.

The tensioner pulls the belt taut when not in use, and the buckle drops down low, usually getting pushed into the cushion (or laying flat). So the center belt is out of the way. It actually is less annoying than the lap only belts--all of those that I've seen lack tensioners (at least in the center) and are otherwise flopping all over the place.

In my truck the front center is mounted onto the console which flips up for the center seat. Yeah, you'd have to be a midget (or ideally legless) to sit there. But it has a 3pt belt. Or at least I recall it having one, great, now I can't wait for lunch to go verify that...

Oh. Didn't know that. I just assumed all centers now were 3pt. My three vehicles have center 3pt harnesses; I would not have bought if they lacked those. [Just ran out and checked--yep, center front on my Tundra has a 3pt.]

Trucks have traditionally gotten a pass on the seldom used seatbelts. Not as many requirements as outboard front seats.

Rangers had lap belt only jump seats available in the rear through the end of production in 2011. Those did automatically tension and lock, but still were just a lap belt. As far as I know, they also had the fairly useless front center lap belt, which was manually adjustable only. Just belts bolted to the floor with a slide adjustment. Not sure if they ditched that at some point before the end of production...my '02 still had it despite being equipped with some sort of baby seat anchor thing on the passenger front seat.

If I remember I'll look at the Silverado setup tomorrow.

I just took a quick look and didn't really investigate, but it looks like even '14 Silverados just use a manually adjustable lap belt for the front center. Rear center is 3 point retractable, but from the parts diagram, it looks like the front center is still manual slide adjustable. I guess that seating postion in trucks has gone under the radar since hardly anyone uses it anymore. Diagrams could be not totally representative, but GM diagrams are pretty good and I would expect them to show a retractable belt or pretensioner.

I haven't seen my trucks center lap belt since I bought it, coil it up and stuff it between the seats and its gone.

The 3rd row in my minivan has the retractor concealed in the ceiling. To use the belt, you pull it down, attach it on the right side with one buckle and then pull it across and latch the second buckle on your left. Pretty slick engineering.
