Should I switch to HM after this oil change?

I wrecked my CBR600, so picked up a 93 accord on the cheap, I have no paper work or word on prior maintenance of the car.

I just did a oil change to Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 / Bosch Filter

The car has 162,509 on the clock atm. So after say 3k (because I know I'll have to change it if it was neglected) should I switch to a HM oil?

Oh also, I really don't wanna start a ****storm about MMO, but should I add some to the car right now then do a 3k change out?

If it's not leaking oil anywhere, IMO no need to change to a(n) HM oil. That said there are many great HM oils out there that some folks on here use from early on.

MMO: do you know the previous maintenance history? If maintained regularly, probably no need. If abused, then maybe some cleaning is needed. Have you looked under the oil fill cap (although that only gives a very basic indication)?

Lastly, using a synthetic for 3000 miles is probably a bit of a waste. If you're using Pennzoil and short intervals for cleaning, then some dino PYB is a better choice; then when it's as clean as you'd like switch to syn and increase your OCI.

you should do the following first:

(1) determine if your engine is burning oil.

(2) any seal leaks?

(3) replace PCV valve right away.

(4) if timing belt hasn't been replaced, do so right away...

Then we can talk about HM oil.

Q.

How does this 2.2 look under the oil fill cap?
Light varnish is okay, as long as there's no buildup on the rocker arms, although I know you can't see a whole lot through the fill hole.
Try any oil you'd like, since Hondas aren't picky.
If you want to use a high mileage oil, and you may not need to, I'd use Maxlife. Start with a 5w30.
We've had Hondas with a lot more than 163K and they never did seem to use much oil, usually little enough that adds during a typical OCI of up to 7K on PP 5w30 were not required.
The only real leak issue I'm aware of with this engine involves the spark plug tube O-rings.
Nothing short of replacement will fix that.

Nope, not leaking oil anywhere, When I was under it today at the shop, it was good to go. Under the filler cap? How could I tell? From what I saw it was pretty clean myself.

So Dino PYB is just the regular Pennzoil bottle like this?

1. Nope, not at all.
2. No seal leaks from my inspection and my buddy who drove me to get the car.
3. I can actually go get a new one now and put it in if it's easy.
4. Don't think it has, I should probably get on that soon. Gotta wait for next pay check

Yup, that's the PYB (Pennzoil conventional aka dino). With no leaks you should be good to go.

Okay cool. Since I just put PP in it, I'll keep checking on if its burning oil at all. But PCV valve is replaced too. Not much else I gotta do for this car I don't think to clean out the motor and have it run better

Its a Honda! If auto think about a pan drop and filter change. I got a 95 Camry I was concerned about 2 years ago. I ran MMO and a few short PYB OCI's. Did plugs, wires, fuel filter, PCV, and have put about 35k on it since. All good!

No science to back it up but I've used MMO for about 28years and I believe it to be a good, albeit slow cleaner. Just my opinion.

I have found that cutting open the oil filter can help you to see if there is cleaning going on (not always). I have been changing the oil in a neighbors '03 Civic and we are on the 4th oil change and when I cut open the filter there is still a lot of nasty crud in the pleats. Use whatever name brand conventional you want and you cant go wrong, I think Maxlife would be a great choice as well. Not scientific but I have seen the most crud in the filter with Maxlife, previous were PYB and M1 HM.

Okay cool thanks guy. Pretty much at this point, use good synthetic oils, and good filters and I'll be set. I'm always looking for oil on sale so I got a Top 5 pick preference for oil I'll put into this accord.

I switched to HM at 280,000 miles. Engine was always clean under valve covers and lifter valley, so that wasn't a factor. Consumption was always higher than I'd prefer. HM oil reduced consumption by approx half. Wish I'd have gone to it sooner...
