Should I go with Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec for my Honda?

I have a 2004 Honda CRV and a 2004 Honda Civic Si. The CRV is at 10K miles right now and the Si is at 3K miles. Honda recommends 5w-20 for both engines.

I was at Wal-Mart today and I saw a 5 quart jug of Mobil1 for $20.17 and a 5 quart jug of Castrol Syntec for $20.08. They also had a 5 quart jug of Pennzoil Platinum for $20.17.

So, they are all basically the same price. Which one would be a better choice for the Honda engines? Which one would you guys go with and why?

Swim up stream against all the other fishies........Go with the Syntec and never look back!

Seriously, you can't go wrong with either one.

My girlfriend uses Mobil 1 5w-20........the car loves it. Also on another website, 7thgencivic.com, many members use Mobil 1. Some even say it's Honda's preferred oil.

I've always associated, without proof of any sort, Castrol to be for muscle cars.......don't know why.

As for Penzoil, I don't know.......not a popular brand of oil for car enthusiasists.

Oh, as for Castrol, my uncle uses Castrol GTX in his 02 Saleen Mustang........recommended by his dealership. I would stick with Mobil 1 for a Honda. I'm currently using Mobil 1 in my Intrepid.....my car is nice and smooth with it.

I do long OCI, and like M1 better due to PAO's higher resistance to oxidation, 12k OCI in Integra with UOA suggesting a try of 15k (despite thicken from 5w30 to a w40 oil, don't get it).

I use Mobil One 0W20/5w20. I also notice a range of mpg better between .5-3. I do not really know if it is a combination between changing from OEM Honda 5W20 conventional oil, 10,000 mile new car break in, and or change in viscosity from 5w to 0W or a combination of all of the above.

If I decided to stay with conventional oils I would use 5w20 Exxon Mobil. Other good ones are Havoline, Chevron Supreme, etc.

I have a 05 Civic Si and I use Castrol Syntec 5w20. I get it in a 5 qt jug at Wal-Mart for $20 you can't beat that with a stick. Oh yea the UOA on this oil has shown to be very good. Just my 2 pennies.

For sure there are a lot of variables, but by in large the Mobil One is better than the Castrol Syntex. In fact if you look at both the VOA's and UOA's for the 5W20 brew, you also can come to your own conclusions.

I personally would have no problems going 10-15-20k on the Mobil One. However it is apparent that the majority of folks will not do this. So whatever OCI you decide on do the math on the lubrication per mile cost. So for example, on the Mobil One the numbers are 2. filter 3.4qt x 4 per quart= 15.60 / by whatever OCI will give you the cost per mile lubricated.

I thought that Amsoil was the only REAL synthetic?

Just flip a coin.
Or go by the bottle design. Choose the one you like the best.
At the factory recommended intervals all of those oils will perform just fine.

Or

Buy one of each.
You'll never know what oil your engine likes the best untill you try one.

Everyone knows the only PAO based true synthetics readily available are Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoil and XD3 if you live in Canada.

There are others, but they are not as available.

Why so much of drama....LOL

Any oil on his list will work great.
Is that clear enough?

No drama, just responding to your crappy advice, he is asking which is the best for him.

He doesn't need pointless advice like what you are giving.

You think picking oil by the looks of the bottle is great advice?

vad - I think you had decent advice presented a humorous way.
Christmas is coming - perhaps you can give a gift of a clue, to the clueless.
