As many of you know, this engine can wreak havoc on oil and i wanted to know if Shell synthetic was up for the challenge? I drive about 10 miles to work each way. I will be using a Napa Gold oil filter and i live in southern New England. All help is greatly appreciated!!!

I think it could easily do 5-7K without any problems but you won't know for sure until you or someone else tries it and sends in a UOA. It is a good oil.

That is a pretty short trip and would fall under severe service, I have a QR engine and it rips oil to shreds so 5K would be my max. Go w/ 5K OCI's with FS synthetic. If you are really interested in longer oil change intervals (OCI's) than do a UOA. Welcome to BITOG!
No, a VQ engine is not easy on the oil. I would do 6k miles max on that oil, engine and driving style combo, followed by a UOA. I'm pretty sure a UOA will back up a shorter OCI.

Fairly short trips plus VQ is not easy on oil, syn or dino, I would do UOA at 5-6k miles to see if it can be extended to 8-10k miles.
There are other oils I'd rather run. If you must use the Shell Syn, keep the OCI shorter. 4k or so.
I would not go beyond 6K without a UOA and it would be a good place to benchmark for a 8K OCI.
Just put the Shell full synthetic 5w30 (SN/GF-5) in the 2010 YARIS 3 door and plan to do a U.O.A.in mid August or little less than 5,000 miles , whichever comes first . Want to see if it holds up any better than the prior fill of PENNZOIL Y.B. 5w30 (SN/GF-5 ).

Odie, It sounds like a plan for Formula Shell Synthetic! How did your UOA come back with the PYB?
