Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 replacing 5W-30

I've found this synthetic oil that should still have more ZDDP in it than regular SM oils. The Nissan Maxima 1994 Service Manual says that 5w30 SG is preferred.

Can this 5W-40 be used as a replacement so I don't have to buy an SM oil with those little additive bottles? Can the 5W-40 do damage to the engine.

Also does anyone know if I can extend out to a 12,000KM OCI with this oil in Severe Service conditions.

Shell Rotella T Synthetic doesn't come in 5w30.

I see no problems using this oil at the 7200 mile OCI.

You are in canada and can get Rotella 0w40 but the 5w40 is a great oil too. I have used 5w40 in my toyota corolla at time and never noticed a difference. I am in a similar climate as you, I can see Toronto across the lake.

I don't really want a heavier oil, I wish the Rotella came in 5w30. But it's because of the ZDDP. The current dino (or Synthetic) oils with SM rating don't have adequate ZDDP content to MATCH the old SG rating, correct?

Did a 94 Maxima still have flat-tappet cams?? The only reason the manual says to use SG is because SG was the newest rating at the time. If its a roller-cam engine (and most everything but the Jeep 4.0/2.5, a few import 4-cylinders, the Rover v8, and a few chevy truck 350s has been roller since the mid 80s) then SM should be more than adequate despite the lower Zn/P percentages.

that's a bit of an overstatement

A Nissan VG30E has non-roller cam followers, and it is a SOHC 2V engine.

However, I see so many such engines installed on older Nissan Work trucks, they receive whatever bulk dino is sold at the oil change place, and they go 250,000 miles without internal work. No special additives are ever used.

I'm not convinced that higher phosphorous oils are really needed, since other EP/AW additives have been invented.

Xw40 viscosity might be a good thing for your engine. During the 1980s, the Nissan VG30E stated 5w30 if the weather is below freezing, 10w30 or 10w40 year round.

Shell RTS will go 12,000 km in your engine, possibly ever further than that.

Rotella T6 is dual rated CJ4/SM. I say run it. Its darn good oil. Im going to run it next oil change. It has a great ad pack.
