I'm looking for an oil to replace my beloved M1 5W-40 T&SUV. Searched around today for the new M1 Turbo Diesel Truck but came up empty handed. I even went to Walmart (really don't like their business practices and the one near me is very...white trashy). While I was in Walmart I spied Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40. I like Shell gas, but I've never given Shell oil much thought. Anyone have any experience with this oil? I've got two weeks before I'm due for an OCI, need to figure this out soon.

Also, does anyone know where I can score M1 5W-40?

I use it in both my jeeps. Holds up good under high mileage and long timewise intervals. Reasonably priced. I'll use it until the M1TD comes out and I can see where the price falls. When T&SUV was $20 for 5qts ..no contest. Now that it's not available ..

Rotella T Syn is a group III. Overpriced in my opinion. Probably a coincidence, but my timing chain broke while using the stuff.

Raven if you post on the Turbo! list, I believe someone ran RTS out to 5k in a 9-5. It seemed to hold up okay. IMHO I'd stay away from 30 weights in our engines..even though I have 5W30 rl in now, that's a bit different....

'course I'm about to run some more dino so what can I tell ya?

Sorry, my eyes glaze over whenever everyone starts talking about group III and PAO, moly, skkdilisaojhisjfuj, whatever....confused.

Not going back to 30 weight, I'll run dino 15w40 before. Why are you running 5w30?

Ah, that clears things up a bit. When you know that M1 = PAO = Group IV everything just falls into place.

Ok, so besides the fact that's it's probably overpriced, this seems like a decent oil.

Eh, I'll just get some 10w30 and 15w50 and mix it, screw this.

Good choice Raven. That's the home-brew super blend...the blend of champions.

Speaking of trash at Wal-Mart, I know what you mean. We used to have to wait for County Fairs to see the freakshow, but now the show can be seen every day of the week at a local Wal-Mart near you (or me).

I don't necessarily think RTS is overpriced ..It's one of 3 5w-40 HDEO oils available in the USA (I think). The only better bargain is XD3 HDEO synth in Canada ..which is a PAO and cheaper then D1/(former T&SUV. Otherwise it's RTS, Chevron Delo, or D1 (I think

) and I'm sure that Amsoil has an offering that I'm leaving out. Now there are quite a few other 5w-40 oils ..but they too are probably Group III ..or much more then RTS

So when D1 was $26/gallon ..and RTS went for $12.88/gallon ..RTS was a screaming bargain. When T&SUV was offered @ $20/5 quart jug ..and RTS went to $13.xx/gallon ..then it was a very slight price difference for a full PAO. Now that T&SUV in the 5w-40 has gone bye-bye ....you're back to D1 ..which is probably $29/gallon since it's not available in any high volume distribution like T&SUV was at WallMart.

This puts RTS back in the driver seat in my book. Now it's not fundamentally as expensive an oil as D1 to produce..but D1 isn't twice the oil that RTS is and cannot support its price.

So RTS may appear to be a high priced Group III (as all are alledged to be) ..but, in this product niche ..the alternatives in PAO are either WAY too expensive ..or just plain not available in our market.

Ha ha, my patience has rewarded me with 2 cases of 5W-40 T&SUV. Did I overpay, like you wouldn't believe, but I'm set for almost a year now. How bad you ask, bit more than $7 a quart. Now some may think that I'm crazy for paying that, but my car and this oil were simply made for each other. And the oil system is the achilles' heel of my beloved SAAB, so paying more isn't a bother. My 9-5 Aero is worth far more in driving enjoyment than the oil will ever be.

I understand Raven. 5W-40 T&SUV is the other gem product of Mobil. It's additive package is to die for. Most of the other Mobil 1 products (excluding 15W-50) seem more geared toward high fuel economy, long drain, and minimizing catalytic converter poisoning. 5W-40 T&SUV is all about wear protection, engine cleanliness, and long drain and that's a very nice set of priorities.
