Ive seen in my local walmart, shell rotella t 5w 40. Theyd ont mkae 5w 30. my neon runs on 5w or 10w 30. Is it safe ot run 5w 40? Or is it too thick to run? Ive read its suppposed to be VERY good at cleaning ect.

NO special need for it, i had read and heard, it cleans very well, inside the engine. Since its not made in 5 or 10w 30, i was curious to know, if is safe to run.

Your engine won't blow up because of it, but it is thicker than you need.

I also wouldn't count on it to perform any cleaning inside your engine.

Aside from the possible mileage penalties, I don't see why you couldn't us it. FWIW - though it is a "5w" rated oil, in freezer tests it does appear to flow more slowly than a 5w30 (like other 5w30+ grades), but that's just under the influence of gravity.

As far as "cleaning", if you have a bit of "slury" in the case I suppose with it's higher detergent/dispersant concentration, it could help to keep more insuspension beyond filtration to benefit as an extended flush, but other than that it will do what it can at helping to KEEP things clean. I suppose with the amount and type of combustive products and simply blow-by of gasoline, SI engines tend to run dirty as compared to CI engines.

Well, then you get into the issues of what elevated zddp levels are doing to your Cat. I don't see a number for 5W40 but 15W40 is quite a bit higher than standard PCMO. You aren't racing your Neon, are you? Unless UOA is showing elevated wear metals, I'd run SM-rated 5W30 (actually, I'd run 0W30, 5W20 or 0W20, on a long OCI, but that's another story
