The VW 504/507 Castrol equivalent is not marketed in Australia. Oil change by the dealership for an Audi RS4 runs at almost $ Aus 600.

That's insane!
It would be cheaper to ship some oil from the States!

Hello !

Ok,a lot of replies i see thanks !
How is it possible for one type of oil to
"produce" more iron (engine wear)in the same engine than
a different product ? Mobil 1 v Shell ?

/ Regards

The presumption is that lower numbers mean better protection. However, the trouble with most UOAs is that you don't always know where the numbers are coming from. An engine with lower numbers could actually be wearing faster if there are wear particles being produced that are outside the range of sizes detectable by the UOA equipment.

If only one element reads high, there's good reason to suspect that something about that particular oil's chemistry is causing those numbers, and that it's not related to wear per se.

This is why small differences in wear numbers, particularly on $20 UOAs, are usually considered negligible. It's also why Terry Dyson charges $99 for a more indepth oil analysis that facilitates more valid conclusions about wear.

Or you could get it from a Ferrari dealership.

Boxster,

Porsche has an "Approved Oil List" -- ask the OP where you bought the car for a copy. Some oils in Europe you can readily buy are:
Fuchs Titan Supersyn
Fuchs Titan GT1
Motul 8100 X-cess
Motul 8100 X-clean
Total Quartz 9000

These are all 5W-40 grade oils and there are many others. I have an 07 Boxster S and been using Motul Xcess with decent results, but the iron readings have been consistently ~22 ppm on UOAs -- I change the oil every 7500 miles because if I don't, the fuel dilution goes above 2% rather quickly. I have 34000 miles on the car now and will change to Redline to see if I can eliminate most of the startup noise from the valve train.

Regards,
paul...

As does the Mobil 1 0W-40 and the Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 in his topic line.

paul_e320, I just have to ask this before someone else does, (and know I'm only razzing you) but which Red Line product has Porsche approval?

Hello,

Ok,thanks for the replies but i think i will stick
to the Mobil 1 "0W40 super syn" oil to fill my car up..
but i will not run the oil so long that porsche
recommends...

/ Regards

I agree, I would not do that either. My sister has a C Class Mercedes that uses the same oil and the dealer changes hers every 13,000 miles or one year. Me personally, I like the one year or 10,000 mile approach.

Yes,that sounds about right,i dont drive the car during winter
so i will change it once a year even if i dont go
10000 miles.."Feel good" Factor...

/ Regards

I know you're only razzing me! Obviously, Porsche's approval doesn't include Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc. I didn't mention the M-1 or Shell oils because I assumed that poster "boxster" was looking for alternatives. I figure that my next oil change will be good until 42,000 miles (50,000 mile warranty), I'll start Redline after that. Ironically, there's a guy on a Boxster forum who brings his Redline oil to the dealer and has the service dept use it in his car!!

Another subject: for the MY 07 Porsche's recommended OCI was 20,000 miles -- after that they went to 12,000 miles (US & Canada) from what I've heard.
Regards,
paul....

Red Line is a particularly good choice for Porsche's.
Dave at RL tends to recommend their 5W-40 grade for most Porsche applications as he did for my friends 996, although even their 5w30 grade has a higher HTHS viscosity than M1's 0W-40 not to mention their 0W-40.
That's not a criticism, just an observation.
As it turned out, my friend stuck with M1 for economic reasons; with an eleven litre sump a 40% oil savings can add up.
